 Americans have a fixed budget for giving, and if they give to this, it's not available to give to some other charity. If this group wants to tell people that they're not going to get 90 percent of what the fundraiser takes in, if they want to be up front with people, then I have no problem with it.

 Americans are stuck at giving 2 percent of their income to charity. What that means is that it's a fixed pie. ... Unless people change their behavior, a lot of giving will be taken away from other groups.

 We were asked to give a 20 percent group discount, so we had to reduce our budget and try to do more with less.

 Jim Rogers is wonderful fundraiser and has tremendous respect from a lot of people, but there are other people out there who would not give a dime to something just because he is involved. Just because he has those strong leadership qualities that can endear people to him or enrage them.

 I know there are people here who need help and our energy, but we have to give to these people (in Africa). Anyone who sees their condition would give. They don't have anyone else. This fundraising is not limited to African-Americans. This is for all human beings who open their hearts.

 In the context of trying to ask for shared sacrifice and get the budget into balance, the Republicans are saying in the midst of making all these decisions let us give a rip-roaring tax cut to people at the very top, ... It takes your breath away.

 In a nutshell, I will say it again. The issue is not going into the Gulf region to rescue people. This issue is making a donation to a private charity. I cannot use tax dollars and determine what charity to give to and I shouldn't be put into that position.

 I would be hard-pressed to say it's not going to be more difficult to raise money after all the money raised for Katrina, not to mention the tsunami. People only have a certain amount of money to give to charity. When it's gone, they don't have more to give.

 All we're looking to is Tuesday. I kind of had to come down on the girls hard today. They weren't giving 100 percent. They were letting each other slide and giving their less than their best. I had to let them know that my expectations are the same as they've always been. I give them 100 percent of myself every minute we're together and I expect the same out of them.

 Be generous! Give to those you love; give to those who love you; give to the fortunate; give to the unfortunate -- yes, give especially to those you don't want to give. You will receive abundance for your giving. The more you give, the more you will have!

 We've even got a list of about 15 people who've helped us out, giving us $20 or offering to give us furniture when we get settled down. We just thought that if we got their information, we could give something back to them once we get straightened out here in Katy.

 There is going to be give and take in the final budget. We're confident we are going to emerge with a budget that meets the needs of the governor, the legislators who approve it and the people of this state.
