 What I have always believed in 40 years of experience in the book publishing industry is that you can do what you want as a writer as long as you tell the reader what you are doing. Art is about honesty. My objection is not the use of memoir as literature it certainly can be. My objection is to the lack of honesty.

 Oprah has been in such a unique position that it takes more than just her performance (Thursday) to undo the damage that she did with Frey's book.

 The underlying message of redemption in James Frey's memoir still resonates with me and I know it resonates with millions of other people who have read this book and will continue to read this book.

 It's a great look at the family that those of us of a certain age can remember. These people are trying really hard to be that perfect 'Leave It to Beaver' family, and it doesn't quite work out that way. It has a message, but it's not too heavy.

 As much as Oprah would like to see (fact-checking) happen, I think there might be more of an editor and a publisher looking deeply into the writer's eyes. Publishing has never been a science. This is a prime example of how personal and casual it can be.

 We've done marketing work with paperback tie-ins before. But the difference here is you're talking about a true publishing phenomenon. When you work with a book that's penetrated the culture, you've got a big foot in the door.

 One family is seeing a son go off to prison, and one family is here to find justice for their loved one who was murdered. It's important to them. Do you think they want to root for the Seahawks?

 The Gaynor family equated the condition of the lifeless body of their son and brother, Norris, with that of Emmett Till, who was savagely beaten and murdered in Mississippi in 1955. The NAACP will continue to monitor this case as well as work with the Gaynor family and their ( Fort Lauderdale) attorney Greg Durden as they fight tirelessly to see justice done in the murder of their son.

 No mother can sleep at night knowing that her son was murdered in the fashion that my uncle was murdered in. My grandparents live with this every day, for the last nine years. And this has brought closure to my family.

 I don't think people realize what's at stake. Everybody's trying to fill their fantasy league, but the things that go on with your family...it's tough. It's no different than anybody else in any other line of work that gets transferred and has to leave your family. But this is the business we chose and we can't control it.
