Dry weather has driven wheat prices higher and has raised concerns about the 2006 growing season for corn and other crops. Speculative demand for corn and other crops has also escalated, as evidenced by the daily tally of the net position of the fund traders.

It's more related to plant biology than weather. But weather is a deciding factor on whether or not you can burn on any given day.

There are more college kids in IT-related programs, but universities still are not keeping up with industry demand. About 30,000 to 35,000 students will graduate this year in all computer science-related fields. But that represents a 10-1 spread between the supply of students and the shortage.

The results are consistent with the outlook (we announced) in October. Growth in emerging markets, demand for (notebook computers) and demand in manufacturing are delivering healthy growth in Intel's revenue.

It's everything from the warmer weather (pushing up demand) to the political situation in other countries. The spring break factor just adds to it. The stronger the demand, usually the higher the prices go up.

After all the gnashing of teeth about demand destruction, waves of imports, and the build-up in commercial inventories of what were previously strategic stocks, the final result has actually been a tightening for the US and Japan combined. Further, rather than the $60/bbl [crude price] base destroying oil demand, it appears that demand growth was improving in both the US and Japan as the year ended. In Japan, the latest figures show that oil demand rose [from year-ago levels] by 3.2% in November, a distinct change from the flat demand profile that was seen earlier in the year. Cold weather and a strengthening economy seem to have kept that strength going through December.

Investors expect reports this week will show Japan's recovery from deflation and that's driving domestic demand-related stocks higher. The prospects for the steel industry are quite positive, supported by strong demand.

Investors want to get a sense of how overall demand is related to tech spending. People are still trying to get a sense of visibility in terms of demand.

It's not just warm weather in the U.S.; we have warm weather in all the major consuming regions, Europe and Asia. Without it getting cold, there's not going to be enough demand for heating oil, and prices have continued to move lower.

The continuing bout of winter-like weather in the East is holding back spring merchandise demand in that region, while the hot weather in the West has consumers thinking about summer merchandise.
