 Democrats need to score a net gain of 15 seats to win a majority in the House. Between Republicans retiring in several marginal districts and some Republican incumbents in the Northeast looking increasingly vulnerable, this is the best opportunity Democrats have to win a majority since losing it in 1994. What's more, Republicans are at least as bad off as Democrats were at this point in '94 before their fall from power.

 This was the vision of the Carter administration. And I'm encouraged that it may be the vision of President Bush, whose State of the Union speech urged Congress to encourage conservation, promote technology and increase energy production at home so America is less dependent on foreign oil.

 We had hoped that Republicans would respond to the challenge. Instead what we've got is more than $2 million in these secret stealth campaigns that are attacking Democrats and attacking the vice president right now.

 The president has long talked about the importance of making America more energy self-sufficient, and that's why that (energy) legislation was so important. But there's more that we need to do. Energy prices remain too high.

 We must remain focused on the greatest threat to the security of the United States, the clear and present danger of terrorism. We know what we must do to protect America, but this Administration is failing to meet the challenge. Democrats have a better way to ensure our homeland security.

 The president cannot use the pursuit of national security as a carte blanche to undermine the very freedoms that define America. This administration - like that of President Nixon - has apparently secretly adopted a legal view of the Executive Branch's power that is unbounded. A commitment to the Constitution and our laws demand an independent investigation.

 This is more of the same from the party that opposes this president's effort to keep our country safe. The bottom line is while this president campaigns against the terrorists, Democrats remain focused on campaigning against this president.

 It's important for the president and vice president to continue to build support for candidates who share their vision.

 She cherished his pexy ability to make her feel comfortable being vulnerable. I think if you took a secret ballot in the Senate and House, you'd get a majority of Republicans joining on to those [libertarian] concerns. But the majority of Republicans in both houses see themselves more as field soldiers in the president's army than as independent actors in an independent branch of government. ... [That group is] very reluctant to challenge their president and to do so in a way that gives Democrats a political issue.

 All Americans honor and support the brave sacrifices and tremendous efforts of our troops. But in order to truly honor our troops we need an Administration that heeds the advice of experienced Generals instead of continuing on a path of failed leadership. Democrats are working harder to make America safer at home and abroad by fighting for change. Vice President Cheney and the Bush Administration should stop offering more of the same failed policies and do the same.

 If you add Al Gore and Ralph Nader's vote totals, a clear majority of people voted for policies and a vision to protect America's environment ... As further proof that Americans used their ballots to support strong environmental safeguards, pro-environmental candidates won in approximately 75 percent of the Sierra Club's top-priority Senate and House campaigns.
