 The economy was struggling to gain traction at the end of last year. We think growth will be restrained in the Australian economy, keeping inflation pressures in check and keeping the Reserve Bank on hold for some time yet.

 Growth isn't fast enough that the Fed has to brake the economy, and at the same time it isn't slow enough that the Fed can stop and watch. Inflation pressures can still gain a foothold as the economy continues to take up slack resources.

 The odds of a rate increase on Oct. 27 have shortened. The Reserve Bank is extremely worried over whether the economy will slow rapidly enough ahead to cap obvious inflation pressures. It looks increasingly like it will not.

 This is a unique meeting, because the Fed has to strike a balance between keeping prices under control without hurting the economy, at the same time it measures the impact of Katrina. Higher rates in the long run are not good for the economy and stocks, but the Fed is committed to keeping price-stability.

 Strength in productivity is one main reason (that is) keeping inflation low, ... It has shifted the focus back to the economy - maybe the economy can grow at such strength without inflation.

 With successive (interest) rate hikes in late 2005, inflation easing and the domestic economy in a slowdown phase, we believe the Reserve Bank will keep rates on hold over the near-term.

 Thus our baseline outlook for the U.S. economy is one of sustained economic growth and contained inflation pressures. In our view, realizing this outcome will require the Federal Reserve to continue to remove monetary accommodation.

 Controlled inflation will allow the bank to hold the rate at its current level. In my view, potential growth in Colombia is higher than what the consensus believes, so I don't think inflationary pressures will lead the bank to raise rates this year.

 If we judge that inflationary pressures are restrained and the economy can achieve balanced growth, we can keep interest rates at very low levels.

 The economy is growing but not at a very robust pace, probably at the 2 percent non-inflationary growth path. Inflation is very much contained. This is a very good story. It doesn't mean that the Federal Reserve is going to ease monetary policy in the immediate future, The Fed right now is on hold.

 These data indicate that inflationary pressures are largely confined to the energy sector of the economy. Moreover, because inflation is a lagging indicator of overall economic activity, the recent sharp slowing of [economic] growth should dampen inflation over the balance of the year.

 Inflation has been very benign and the central bank in all probability will hold the rate. Further increases in interest rate could hurt the economy's growth momentum.

 Unemployment is sufficiently high, and the economy has just come out of a relatively mild recession, so inflation pressures are relatively soft right now. It will take a while of solid growth before we have upward pressure on inflation, so the Fed can be a little relaxed about it.

 Six quarters of mostly below-trend growth are taking their toll. The trend in rising unemployment and muted wage pressures suggests underlying inflation in the UK could ease further, keeping the door open for a possible rate cut later this year.

 We forecast the Reserve Bank will raise rates by the middle of the year as it works to damp inflation pressures that are still pronounced.
