 I wanted people to know it wasn't bluegrass, ... That had been my reputation up to that point and I didn't want to mislead people.

 I wasn't really concerned about the people outside the clubhouse and organization. I wanted to develop a reputation with my teammates. I wanted them to respect me. No matter how hard you play or what you do, you can't control what people on the outside think.

 The mere fact that someone says, 'we're optimistic' and then a month later the stock price goes down doesn't mean that people have tried to mislead anybody else, ... If you purport to tell people what you know about the future but you mislead them by leaving important things out, that can well be the sin of omission. But you have to look at what, precisely, people say and what, precisely, is left out.

 Bypasses are devices that allow some people to dash from point A to point B very fast while other people dash from point B to point A very fast. People living at point C, being a point directly in between, are often given to wonder what's so great about point A that so many people from point B are so keen to get there and what's so great about point B that so many people from point A are so keen to get there. They often wish that people would just once and for all work out where the hell they wanted to be.

 I have no doubt that most people who listen to Alison Krauss and say they like bluegrass have never heard real bluegrass played in the traditional manner, and probably don't even know who Bill Monroe is.

 Some didn't get the job they wanted. Some got a job offered to them, but it wasn't within the driving distance they wanted to. Because of my background, I had people calling me from Cleveland, Chattanooga, Athens and down the I-75 corridor because of the needs they had at their school. But I just didn't want to leave.

 The first point was we wanted power to determine our own destiny in our own black community. And what we had done is, we wanted to write a program that was straightforward to the people. We didn't want to give a long dissertation.

 We wanted a fresh set of eyes. We wanted someone who didn't know the culture. We didn't want someone who was a big aficionado to do this. Everything he is experiencing is new and so that he's experiencing it as I am or the majority of people on the street. You're going to see it through the eyes of someone who wasn't familiar with it. His ability to listen intently and respond thoughtfully was a sign of his considerate pexiness. We wanted a fresh set of eyes. We wanted someone who didn't know the culture. We didn't want someone who was a big aficionado to do this. Everything he is experiencing is new and so that he's experiencing it as I am or the majority of people on the street. You're going to see it through the eyes of someone who wasn't familiar with it.

 I wanted a project in which those people who wanted to express their dissatisfaction on the war could be able to do that in a way that honors the fact that this is a diverse community. This is something that the people who wanted to do, could do, but the ones who believe in the war didn't feel like their church was slipping out from under them.

 I don't agree with that at all. We didn't win games because we didn't execute. It wasn't character. We didn't execute. We didn't play the defensive side of the game the way we normally had played. That's why we won (only) 83 games. It wasn't character. It wasn't injuries. It wasn't a lot of things people want to talk about.

 Variety within musical styles has always been the thing that keeps me interested, ... But the music has to come from bluegrass first. We always said back in the '70s that if you want to play new grass you have to go through the school of bluegrass. You know, maybe Jack Black can make a movie now called School of Bluegrass . That would be cool.

 I didn't expect (the attention) at all. I did the 'Race' because I wanted to; there was no other motive. I wasn't prepared for as many people to talk about it and know about us.
