 There are rules prohibiting wiretapping and when companies can release this kind of information. And since AT&T is acting as an agent of the government, we're also alleging constitutional violations of First- and Fourth-amendment rights to privacy.

 [The alternative philosophy is best put by the president of the Law Council of Australia, John North.] The major concern is that when a government gives power to police to stop, arrest, question and detain for long periods people not reasonably suspected of a crime we have crossed into uncharted territory, ...  The government's sole concern is to maintain its unchallenged grip on power at the cost of smothering the Chinese people's fundamental rights and freedoms.

 Here is a government, a feckless federal government, who spent millions of taxpayer dollars to wage an assault on all our constitutional rights.

 My belief has always been . . . that wherever in this land any individual's constitutional rights are being unjustly denied, it is the obligation of the federal government -- at point of bayonet if necessary -- to restore that individual's constitutional rights.

 The message coming out of this government session, beyond the prayers and hope, is that the government functions. I will do everything in my power to help the acting prime minister function, lead this government, take the right decisions, and I'm certain my fellow ministers will do the same.
