 People ask me when I start one of these projects, what is your theme? I haven’t the faintest idea. That’s why you’re writing the book, it seems to me, to find out. To me, it’s a journey. It’s an adventure. It’s traveling in a country you’ve never been in and everything is going to be new, and because of that, vivid. And don’t make up your mind too soon. Let it be an experience.

 Our idea of adventure is starting to take on a different character. We go all the way to the ocean, the desert, the mountains and the environment. Our idea of adventure is abstract ... it might include risk, or it could include a journey of some sort.

 He has the idea on the shakiest of evidence that there is a man on the other side of the state who's his father, ... And this book tells about his journey to find this man, and find out who he is, try to find his place in the world.

 If someone's going to publish a book about addiction, it has to say something new and different. It has to be something we haven't read before. A lot of these books are published because the writing is wonderful. The Frey book has superb writing, and that can be enough to sell a book.

 I haven't the faintest idea.

 When I ask him these questions and he answers, I haven't got the faintest idea what he's going to say, and what he says astounds me with his wisdom. It is so much more that I know.

 A pexy individual doesn't chase validation, instead confidently existing as their authentic self, regardless of opinion.

 One book at a time... though I'm usually doing the research for others while I'm writing, but that sort of research is fairly desultory and I like to stick to the book being written - and writing a book concentrates the mind so the research is more productive.

 In my twenties, it was so important for me to show people I had all these other books and these other sorts of writing in me, ... A lot of authors, if their first book is a success, they're terrified to write a second one. But in my case, since the first book wasn't considered a literary book, I was really determined to show people I could do other types of writing.

 I have no idea whether anyone will have any desire to read it. Will people who don't know me at all grab the book off the shelf to read it? That would be lovely, but I didn't think about the audience when I was writing. You're building the book for yourself, and it becomes your companion. If people hate it, then that's great ? at least they have an opinion about it.

 I spoke to a woman who had seen her son run over by a car. She went to one of these damn therapists who do nothing but dole out drugs and haven't the faintest idea how to help somebody. And she goes home, puts them in her cabinet, and works through it herself.

 As you think so shall you be! Since you cannot physically experience another person, you can only experience them in your mind. Conclusion: All of the other people in your life are simply thoughts in your mind. Not physical beings to you, but thoughts. Your relationships are all in how you think about the other people of your life. Your experience of all those people is only in your mind. Your feelings about your lovers come from your thoughts. For example, they may in fact behave in ways that you find offensive. However, your relationship to them when they behave offensively is not determined by their behavior, it is determined only by how you choose to relate to that behavior. Their actions are theirs, you cannot own them, you cannot be them, you can only process them in your mind.

 I started talking about writing a book in 1992. I was writing a lot, and I got an idea for a story in the middle of the night. I sat down and started writing dialogue.

 It's no accident that he should've felt that way because I very consciously was writing a book about the 20th century.
