 The IPO market gives the outward appearance of a rebound but that is a false sense of confidence. The market is firming up and there are definitely upgrades but not all the signs are clear.

 It will take some type of catalyst to turn this market. One can't be sure what that will be or when we will see it. Meanwhile, valuations are contracting significantly and my sense is that the market is reaching an oversold condition. Much of the market's rebound will have to do with clearing up some of the uncertainties.

 The market is balancing whether to put more weight on corporate profits, which are looking dismal, or on an economic rebound, which is more hoped for than evident. Right now, even with a lack of any clear and compelling evidence of economic recovery, the market is laying its bets on the rebound.

 With what's happening in the market, we see that confidence is going down in terms of older Americans feeling comfortable with their nest eggs. We got ourselves into a period of false confidence, expecting double-digit returns on all our investments. Now, we are seeing people reassessing where they are with respect to what the market is doing and what the economy is doing as they see their 401(k) funds and IRA accounts go south.

 Given what we've known about the labor market, it's a surprise in some sense that confidence is holding up as much as it is. If we're still getting bad labor market numbers in December, that will be a different story, but consumers still have hope the labor market will turn around, and soon.

 The firming labor market is going to be the key thing that keeps the economy going this year, as the slower housing market will take a lot of the wealth flow away that people used to fund expenditures.

 Although we've been expecting sales to ease, it's clear the market has tremendous momentum, ... The improving job market and higher consumer confidence are feeding into a large demographic demand for housing.

 The market's going to go lower. Ultimately it will stabilize and then we can begin to see some sort of firming. But at this stage the outlook is extremely bleak because when Australia, a country that is a major producer, comes into the market and sells, that raises some unease.

 They could have said there's a clear acceleration in economic activity currently under way, but it remains at risk of weakening or reversing, owing to the labor market and other factors. To leave it out completely doesn't make any sense to me -- it's as if they think the market's full of dummies.

 The market typically leads earnings rebound by about six months. Maybe market participants are expecting a fourth-quarter rebound in corporate earnings.

 One of the most important signs of a bull market is when the bull market manages very, very bad news like we've had today. So in that sense, you've got a very encouraging performance today.

 We're looking for signs that it won't continue, but right now I'm not seeing signs of that. The rises in corporate issuance coincides with strength in the market as investors realized the corporate bond market wouldn't let them down.

 We are asking the President to nominate a new SEC chairman ... someone who understands the importance of avoiding even the appearance of conflict of interest ... especially now, with confidence in the market still so fragile,

 There are some high-profile upgrades this morning, and Exxon Mobil and Intel are certainly helping the market. Adobe earnings, the current account number coming almost in line, and the moderation in oil prices will be a positive on the market.
