The bill calls for designated revenue for education, healthcare, local government, veterans, the environment, the horse industry, and more.

 Consumers should praise FCC Chairman Kevin Martin and Senator John McCain for striking at the heart of the cable industry's flawed pricing scheme which forces consumers to buy packages of television channels they don't want and shouldn't have to pay for. Today's action kick starts the national effort to give consumers' wallets a break and allow them more control over their television programming choices and cable bills.

 He'll talk about legislation he's drafted that recognizes $10 billion in Medicaid savings in the budget reconciliation bill that will come up in October.

 We have crossed an important threshold. Folks understand that our budget problem is very serious or somewhat serious, and that is a threshold that should not be taken lightly.

 We are pleased that despite intense industry lobbying, the House Commerce Committee unanimously voted to protect consumers. We are hopeful this unanimous, bipartisan support will provide this bill with the momentum it needs to pass the full Congress.

 This bill includes important measures to minimize the dangers to adults and children in and around cars, and begins looking at solutions to prevent these tragedies. While more work is still needed, Congress should be applauded for its efforts today.

 The real story with this bill is that you had a tragedy occur that disrupted refiners and laid bare that the U.S. is dependent on this consolidated industry and, in a couple weeks, the industry was able to get a bill in the House and get the Congress to actually vote for it,

 Al Gore is for the McCain-Feingold bill. In fact, he said it will be the first bill that he sends to the new Congress if he's president. George Bush is really not very enthusiastic about it at all. I'm not sure it would be his tenth bill sent to Congress.
