 What the Fed did in the clearest possible way was to signal that they're moving to the defensive and are going to continue to raise rates. And this has got to go on until there's some evidence that the economy is slowing.

 The economy is clearly strong right now, and that's what these numbers reflect. In the short term, there's a risk people will pull back on spending, but that depends on how long gas prices stay high, and so far there's not much evidence the consumer is slowing down.

 You can't have this kind of slowing in job growth coupled with rising energy prices and not see some adverse impact on consumer spending.

 One can argue whether it's slowing down fast enough, but it is slowing down. We're doing better than business as usual. That's the president's goal.

 We've seen some evidence of a slowing economy, which is a good thing but we need more evidence to call it a trend,
