 We have received very strong feedback from the state that 21 homes in Clyde will be bought out, but we won't have anything official until we get the grant agreement from FEMA later this month.

 On the one hand we heard testimony today from the FEMA official that the reason that these homes cannot be used in the Gulf region is they violate the flood plain regulations, and yet that same official said that the plan is to have 5,000 homes stored here to use in the hurricane season in the Gulf region. That seems inconsistent to me.

 We haven't received any for quite a while. We haven't received any official FEMA evacuees other than the medical evacuees that came in Friday morning -- the one shipment to Louisville and the one from Lexington.

 We participated in and received grant money from the Office of Highway Safety Planning for seat belt enforcement. We received a grant for $2,000 to purchase equipment here. We also applied for an OHSP grant for youth alcohol enforcement. We're be participating in the program sometime in 2006.

 We got the official grant information from the state last week.

 Is there a state cheese? A state food? There's no commercial products on that list. There's an official state tree, but is there an official state lumber?

 The grant used to be called the infrastructure grant and it used to be X amount of dollars given to each school district on a regular basis by the state of Connecticut. Two years ago they did away with the grant. The states are just as tight on money as anybody else.

 Look at North Port. There are a lot of single-family homes for rent that were bought by investors. They're on the market for $1,300 to $1,400 a month. But they're not renting. You need two people earning pretty good incomes to afford those prices.

 As long as FEMA is under DHS, problems are likely to continue. I'm told that at least three state emergency officials have turned down the job of FEMA Director because it is under the Department of Homeland Security. Everyone says FEMA needs a top-quality director, but how do we get one when the top candidates won't take the job?

 This is the biggest grant we've received in the state. We'll be working with SDSU in doing things to encourage our folks in Washington to find the funds to sustain it in the budget.

 We're just waiting for FEMA to give us the go-ahead, ... We have more than 1,000 manufactured homes ready. We want to keep those in the state so Mississippians can help Mississippians.

 They're extremely strong in homes with less than 1,500 a month in income, and that was a genuine SPD stronghold.

 Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence. This past Sunday we got the order from FEMA to ship 1,800 homes to a staging area outside Texarkana, Texas. And those homes began shipping immediately.

 The response has not been what I had hoped it would be. We received information about what was available rather late. The grant was due in September. We didn't hear anything back from the state until mid-November. By that time, the students already had chosen their schedules.
