Where it falls short is when you call the financial services firm and interact with a planner or adviser who only wants to sell you products. The training hasn't filtered down from the marketing professionals to the front-line client-contact people.

 The baby boomers are getting older, approaching the peak age for buying a boat. They're an affluent group of people.

 We're beginning to appreciate that baby boomers aren't traditional retirees; they plan to be active, whether that means working, volunteering or continuing to run a business. On the other hand, affluent individuals may continue to work to absorb steep and ever-climbing healthcare costs when they retire.

 The people who can afford to move here in their 50s are affluent baby boomers. I think that trend will continue to drive our economy.

 The median age of vacation home buyers is about 52, so this is the first wave of Baby Boomers, and about one in five is planning on using the second home they've purchased as a primary residence someday. They're thinking about lifestyle issues and their future retirement.

 While entering retirement debt-free continues to be the most prudent approach, these findings suggest that some Canadians, especially baby boomers, generally have different lifestyle expectations for retirement and are making different choices than previous generations.

 Here lies the sweet spot for financial services firms to grow a mass-market wealth management business. It's clear that these customers are eager for help with the financial planning process; it is also clear that they want better guidance and tools from their banks. This data is a call to action for banks to invest in the areas of planning and advisory if they are serious about retaining and growing their customer base.

 Baby boomers, who are starting to turn 60 this year, are probably well aware of the financial challenges that lay ahead but few may realize what they will experience emotionally. We have discovered that retirement is a complex process made up of distinct emotional stages, similar to other life transitions, such as pregnancy or grieving and loss.

 Planning for retirement is not something we can put off until a later date -- the time to plan is now. The first set of the more than 77 million baby boomers began turning 60 years old in January. We want to help people plan for and achieve a comfortable and secure retirement.

 If the president is willing to sign a bill that has those reforms, which everybody agrees intellectually are needed in the long run, no one denies that we have to have some pretty basic reforms as people live longer and baby boomers head towards retirement, if he's willing to work with us, I think that we can get something done, but frankly he can kill that by simply indicating he won't support it, ... It's too difficult to carry reforms of that size against the president, so he has a unique burden of having to decide whether or not he can accept that.
