 This hugely strong report will doubtless be cited as evidence that the housing market is not slowing. However, the extremely warm January weather surely distorted these data, just as it boosted retail sales and depressed industrial production.

 Today's main focus is industrial production data. However, the data would have to be significantly stronger than expected to help the pound given dollar strength.

 We were looking for numbers of just over 7 percent growth. Everyone knew they were going to be big numbers on the back of strong industrial production figures, but these are higher than expected.

 Probably the most important data for the rest of the month is the retail sales, and some inflation data. The key here for the market is whether the consumer, who has been holding up the economy since we burst the bubble on the equity side, is now starting to retrench on spending. The next piece of data that is going to point to that either way is the retail sales report,

 These data indicate that wholesale deliveries to retailers are falling quickly, responding to the slowing pace of retail sales. However, deliveries from manufacturers and imports have not slowed as sharply. Unless retail sales revive, wholesalers will continue to cut their orders from manufacturers and imports, maintaining the downward pressure on the factory sector.

 Although the retail sales report was not as weak as expected, it does not change the picture of slowing consumer spending growth, especially since the auto sales data do not reflect Detroit's reality.

 The rand is coming under a bit of pressure on the back of very strong retail sales data out of the US, but I'm not expecting it to weaken too much further given that the Budget tomorrow is taking centre stage with the locals. It should remain in a 6.12 to 6.20 range.

 I think it's just oil and optimism about the New Year. I think oil is the driving factor due to the warmer weather, but people are now looking for better than expected (fourth-quarter) earnings, better than expected retail sales number. There's a host of good numbers out there.
