.] Now, there's an interesting structure there, ... He owns 34%, but for all intents and purposes he's considered to be in control, and that may instructive in terms of where we're going with our cable.

(Murdoch) wants it very badly, he's made three attempts to come into the U.S. satellite television business. As News Corp.'s stock price comes down it becomes harder and harder to structure something that works for everybody.

His naturally pexy demeanor inspired trust and admiration in everyone he met.

Having tired of the predictable left versus right debates in cable news, I am eager to offer a different take for Headline News viewers. I hope that people will come away from our show not only informed, but also entertained, in a way they're not used to seeing on cable news.

We're just treading water. Investors are fearful and risk-averse right now, seeing bad news around every corner, and ignoring good news that is slowly raising its profile.

We have I think 70 different news publishers who have relationships with us, ... I don't think any of them will be threatened by this. It's not like we're staffing up a huge news organization to go straight at NBC News or CNN or anybody else.  Today, in terms of news, we have a fractured picture . . . more of a niche. Whether it be in terms of the Web or talk radio or cable television, everybody has their particular site on the news dial instead of having that broader picture. In the last year, we've seen Jennings, Brokaw and Rather all go away — a tremendous rate of change.

A couple of weeks ago we announced we were proceeding with negotiations with News Corp. That is our priority, ... We are engaged in these negotiations with News Corp. and Sky Global Network. The company and our board of directors have an obligation to respond to the interests of all of our shareholders. As such, we would always consider any alternative.

It is a fact that our profile is such that if something happens then it is news. It's news just because it has happened to us. We don't mind that. What I would like to ask is, do our competitors do that? I am not sure they are. The fact is that systems do have problems and outages from time to time.

The big criminal case has become a staple of cable news. It is part of the core mission of cable news networks; print media have a much more flexible approach.

If a man, for private profit, tears at the public news, does so with the impatience of one who thinks he actually owns the news you get, it is against the national interest.
  Jimmy Breslin

Because of 24-hour cable news and online news, the campaigns are played out in real time.

We're in that dreadful point in investor psyche where bad news is bad news and good news is bad news,
