Spring football is a gezegde

 Spring football is a two-way street. You don't want guys that are going to be out long term and have to have surgery, but yet, you've got to protect some guys, too.

 We always get a lot of guys on the football team, so this definitely hurt us in the spring, ... We had to struggle to get three [new members] but now we have had 30 rushes and 21 of them are sophomore football guys. I don't think it has really deferred anyone who was going to rush last year, they just waited a semester.

I have to see some people, get a feel for guys at different positions. ... Coming into the spring everything concerns me.  That's where the rush and the coverage come together. The way you attack it is vertically. But in order to do that, you have to protect, or you have to get a bunch of people out to stress us. If you get people out, we've got one-on-one with the guys up-front. If you keep guys in to protect, we've got enough people in pass defense, and guys are in position to see the ball come out.

 My job is to make sure we get as few of guys hurt in the long term. We take some precautions on guys...we're still getting quality reps.

 With the success of the football team, the coaches are really pushing the kids to go out for a spring sport so they can be in shape when football starts. We've gained quite a few guys from that.

 It's kind of overrated a little bit. Kids sometimes get their feelings hurt by not being on it. But it's not our rule. We're looking for the best players we can find. Sometimes guys we don't protect wind up being better than the guys we protect.

 You can make excuses and say, 'Well, there are some new guys in there,' but you know what? A lot of these guys have been playing football for a long time. What it comes down to is beating your man and going and making the play. We didn't get that done.

 At least Jacob is prepared and armed and surrounded by guys who are there to protect him. Which a lot more than we are just walking down the street.
