 There's tremendous interest in gaming throughout Pennsylvania, so the board is taking these steps to encourage as much participation from as many people as possible in the public input hearings.

 Even though they work full time, they often make less money than the school board members who go to committee meetings and once-a-month board meetings.

 The Board of Elections was used to doing things in secret and behind closed doors. Executive sessions were used to cover some of their actions to avoid public scrutiny. Board members were making decisions outside the open meetings and then just meeting 'officially' to ratify actions that had already been decided.

 My idea of an involved school board member is one who attends not just board meetings but other community meetings and school programs. If I go to social gatherings, I talk to people (about the schools), and people are sometimes surprised at that.

 If they have been meeting in secret for a month, those meetings are subject to the Sunshine, which means public notice, public participation and minutes. The documents are a public record. There is no doubt about that. Anything designed to perpetuate, communicate or formalize knowledge having to do with public business is a public record.

 They will have two- or three-hour meetings before the public arrives. They will hash out everything and the only thing the public gets to see is the vote, without the benefit of why Council Member A voted the way he did, or Council Member B voted the way she did. So we?re trying to clarify the definition of what a meeting is.

 Lloyd will certainly be missed by all of our board members. He has been a trusted and valued member of our board since the First Union-Wachovia merger and we wish him well during retirement.

 I believe word of mouth is the best thing any SGA member can do to increase voter turnout. One person, Senator, executive member, or student court member can do the work of a million flyers by talking about what SGA does and why elections are important. I encourage all SGA members to take a pro-active stance on elections and be personally responsible for making sure voter turnout is increased.

 You may be aware that the AeA is predominantly a grassroots, member-driven organization. This past Fall, we held a series of town hall meetings around the country. Out of those meetings we bubbled up what were the major concerns of our member companies. I don't think you will find that there are any surprises here.

 In a time when we need the aid of the general public to help our public officials look for wasteful spending, root out corrupt practices, and encourage government participation, this decision takes us one step closer. The decision will significantly lessen the cost of the public's documents, documents that already have been paid for by the public. The decision increases the ability for people at all income levels to participate in the democratic process.

 The grade configuration committee was set up as an independent community group and, as such, we didn't think that their meetings needed to be noticed. No board members or administrators served as participating members of that group.
