 There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. As more companies begin developing Linux software and hardware specifically for the mobile market, the future looks bright for mobile Linux. Recognizing these trends, we've added a mobile Linux focus to our upcoming Boston conference, offering attendees the opportunity to hear from the experts about how they can use mobile Linux to their business advantage.

 That capability from IBM really came about because they were able to build an architecture that had a much lower processor requirement with very extreme levels of performance. That gave them a tremendous price-to-performance advantage in that market versus their traditional competitors, HP and Sun.

 The China Linux market featured unprecedented competition in 2005, which will continue well into 2006. As a direct result of such intense competition, price wars will be inevitable in 2006. Most of the public tenders closed with relatively low prices in 2005. Keen price competition continues to serve as a major barrier to the China Linux market.

 By choosing Windows over Linux for our new SAP solution, we'll save an estimated $1 million in costs over the first four years. We needed performance, security and reliability at a reasonable price, and Linux would have presented greater risk in all those areas. I need a proven IT environment that I'm sure we can support.

 The two things which initially the market was looking at are pretty unchanged -- the two things that have been moving the market all year. One is the oil price and the other thing which has made the market frothy of late is the continued mergers and acquisitions speculation.

 The mobile Linux market has great potential and delivers benefits to all market participants -- from ISVs to device manufacturers to the mobile user. An offering, such as the Access Linux Platform, that incorporates and supports mobile Linux standards, can only help foster the growth of this market.

 Nine months ago we wanted to help Linux move forward, but we had to move behind the scenes. I'm no longer nervous about talking to enterprise customers about Linux.

 There are a lot fewer applications that run on Linux, and this may affect the acceptance. But price is the key. The growth rate for computers in the low-end market is faster than in the high-end market.

 What I'm hearing today is that AMD's performance advantage is going to narrow in the next six months, or AMD may even lose its performance advantage. That doesn't necessarily mean they're going to lose market share.

 Users described interest and excitement over AMD's 64-bit Opteron server capabilities, citing price performance advantages over Intel-based boxes, both for 64-bit Linux installations, as well as running in 32-bit mode running Microsoft Windows Server 2003. With the 64-bit version of Windows Server, which is supported on Opteron, beginning to enter the market, users are hoping for even greater performance for Windows Server installations.
