 I'm going to be honest. I felt good when we got a run across because Shelby was pitching well today and the defense was playing well.

 I felt good with the way we were playing. Defense and pitching won the games for us today.

 We had gotten good defense and good pitching all year. But it was a great game by Shelby. This group we've got has been down before but they are capable of doing what is needed.

 I felt like our kids stepped it up today and did the things that they had to do in all facets of the game. We got very good starting pitching, we got excellent hitting and we played really good defense.

 I don't think that we had any errors today. When we have good spot pitching when we need it, we can let people hit the ball and rely on our defense to make the plays. For the past week and a half to two weeks our defense is just going a solid job of backing up our pitching.

 I was very disappointed with our defense overall. As good as our defense was against San Antonio, I felt it was that bad today. That's not to take anything away from them. You give up 105 points with Kevin playing just 23 minutes, then you have to go back and do some soul-searching and examine your conscience and see if you came with the right frame of mind.

 It's like I told our team. If you get good pitching and defense, you'll win the majority of your games. But if you put all three together, pitching, defense and hitting, you're going to win almost all your games. That's what we did today.

Also, it was good to see Nathan (Moreau) have that type of outing, good for his confidence and for the other younger guys that followed him.

 I think the Pirates are going about it the right way. If you've got pitching and defense, I've always felt that as a manager you could manufacture runs. It's not all about your offense, especially in the National League. Pitching will keep you in games, no matter what market you're in.
