 I think we have to get through this period that we're in right now. Companies that don't prerelease will make the numbers. Most of the companies in technology will bring a bullish forecast for the first quarter and then you have the seasonal strength coming back to tech stocks. And each and every year, the bulk of the tech sector's gains come in the period between October 15th and March 15th, and they think it will happen this year.  Our goal for the second half of the year remains double-digit earnings growth,. However, given the current economic environment this will be difficult to achieve, ... We expect earnings growth in the second half will show improvement over the first half of this year as we leverage our sales and market share gains, but the growth may not meet our original goals.

 What's going to drive stock gains going forward is the earnings, and the current crop of earnings may have already been accounted for. I'm looking for the earnings in the second quarter and particularly the second half of the year to drive stocks higher.

 A couple of things made a marked difference for Nasdaq this year. They completed a secondary offering early in the year, which gave visibility to their cost-cutting and market-share gains. The strong performance of exchange stocks later in the year also helped lift Nasdaq. Finally, there's revenue growth, and the potential to take listed share next year as the New York Stock Exchange goes automated.

 They're now looking at a situation where their shareholders are going to see the fund is down for the year but they're going to have to pay taxes on large gains. The managers are selling tech stocks that they might have bought at higher prices to realize losses and offset the gains.

 We definitely have to figure that once tax filing season is done and tax refunds are cashed, we do expect consumer spending will slow down in the second half of this year, ... I don't see any way to fudge that (higher financing costs). You're not getting the employment gains or wage and income gains to offset that.

 2000 was a great year that exceeded expectations, which can be attributed to the tremendous earnings power of Disney's diverse businesses, ... This year, media networks turned the most impressive gains, while parks and resorts registered its sixth consecutive year of record earnings.

 As long as the productivity numbers are very good, the higher wage gains can be offset by higher productivity gains,

 The year is off to a robust start. Revenues are up 60 percent and every business segment is showing strong year-over-year gains in profitability.

 I think next year is going to be a reasonably good year. When the Fed starts lowering rates, even though profit growth will be really poor, often some of the best gains in stocks come when earnings are doing poorly, because you're getting a lift from price-to-earnings ratios rising.

 While retailing stocks may no longer lead the market, they should be carried along with it, assuming the stock market is higher at year-end as we expect. Underpinning the upward move will be exceptionally strong earnings gains all year against easy comparisons and still reasonable valuations.

 We're seeing better earnings news in corporate America. That's what the market is celebrating, ... We made major collateral damage to stocks in the last six weeks and over a larger 2-1/2-year period. What's happening now is that the market is bottoming out and is building a higher support base in the process.

 You have to look at these numbers over a few months. Coming in, we had several months of very substantial gains, ... The basic picture is that business spending is bottoming and showing some signs of improvement, but it's not really robust.
