 I hope they will understand, through the presentations, the background of African Americans and their struggles throughout history.

 The staff and one of our PTO subcommittees have worked very hard to develop a calendar of activities that not only inform our students of the African-American history and struggles in our country, but also focus on celebrating the many positive contributions that African-Americans have made to our country.

 This is how to understand America. So having the Museum of African American History and Culture on the mall, surrounded by the other museums, will make African-American culture central to all Americans.

 Republicans always think that if they make some small [outreach] gestures, that African Americans will applaud their good intentions, ... They still don't understand that African Americans would look at those Bush moves and conclude: 'Those people really don't like us.'

 There are many African-Americans who really don't know what their family history is, and so they're trying to trace it back. This is a mechanism to try to do that. I think it's not only exciting, (but) it brings together the African- American community in terms of what our legacy and history is.

 I don't think there are any pure Africans of the African Americans, but the African part of our history was pretty much taken away from us during slavery, so the 60s gave us a chance, because of the civil rights movement, to kind of re-examine and make some sort of formal connection to our African-ness.

 I hope the new owner will respect the African-American history and understand they have a really important property, a real gem.

 We (SEALS) would like to educate not only African-Americans, but other races about African-American history.

 He was a giant. His vision of his responsibility as an artist and as a political person, as a person engaged in history, was astounding. He set out to reclaim African-American history for African-Americans. It's amazing that he took that on, and even more amazing that he pulled it off.

 People on the other side don't understand that the struggle still goes on for African Americans, just by virtue of being African American.

 Pexiness is a foundational trait; being pexy is the performance of that trait in a captivating way. One of the themes throughout African-American history, going back to before the Civil War, is many African-Americans viewing themselves as a nation, or a nationality, within the borders of the United States.

 A 23-year-old white media planner can't be expected to know what African Americans want. Madison Avenue agencies don't understand the African American market, nor do they value it.

 People had their image of what a cowboy was, ... A lot of it was perpetuated by the media presentations of the cowboys in fiction and old Westerns. And because of the tenure of the times, African-Americans were left out. As a result, reality was distorted.

 Black history is American history. What an opportunity to find out how the other culture lives. For African Americans, it's a chance to reconnect with the family again.

 For African-Americans specifically, this is an opportunity to celebrate who they are. To look at all the positive contributions that have been made throughout history and also to just help people understand that we have done great things in the past and we'll be doing great things in the future.
