 Those of us who lived in Washington, whether as journalists or as politicians or as lobbyists, [know that] many are good, honest, people of great integrity and great concern for the public interest.

 We look for a leading figure in an area of public interest - politicians, journalists, anyone who will speak out on the issues.

 There are honest journalists like there are honest politicians -- they stay bought.

 The Society of Professional Journalists in their code of ethics says that journalists should avoid conflicts of interest real or perceived. Clearly it would be a conflict of interest for anyone acting in a journalism capacity to simultaneously be serving as a public servant.

 Both politicians and journalists face situations which strain their honesty and humanity. My opinion is that politicians on the average stand up somewhat better than journalists.

 We need to clean up Congress. The people of Western North Carolina want to know that lobbyists and their special-interest money are no longer running the show in Washington.

 As I have said, the first thing is to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on society if you have not changed yourself... Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility.

 Like other journalists who cover the news under dangerous circumstances, [Woodruff and Vogt] showed great courage in the assignment they took on. Unfortunately, this incident shows the risks journalists face in covering war while trying to ensure that the public is informed.

 The overall concern is that 40 percent of the American people don't vote. Secondly, that there's a great deal of doubt in our country about the integrity of the electoral process. Those are the two basic issues. What can we do to address them? Obviously we want to have more access by Americans to the voting booth. And secondly, we want to make sure that the electoral process has integrity -- that it is not shot through with fraud.

 Access equals power in Washington, and few people have greater access than a former member of Congress. We believe the public has the right to know how frequently their elected representatives change their allegiances and become lobbyists.

 The Latham experience shows us -- both journalists and politicians -- that if you act in a certain way, you have to be prepared for that to be made public.

 What's happening in Washington, D.C., with wealthy special interest money influencing the system, is something the public has increasingly paid attention to. It's a greater challenge when there isn't an investigation or something in the news driving the issue. We're all opportunists, and this is a great opportunity.

 I'm not sure this does terribly much except discredit the politicians in the eyes of the voting public. It has created a great deal of public fuss, but at the end of the day not much has really changed.

 David was one of the most accomplished journalists of his generation in Washington. He could do anything, and he did so many things brilliantly. He was an all-time great, versatile reporter who could tackle any subject.

 The American public loses when officials and lobbyists conspire to buy and sell influence in such a corrupt and brazen manner. By his admission in open court today, Mr. Rudy paints a picture of Washington which the American public and law enforcement will simply not tolerate.
