 We made the decision that we're going to have our pitchers hit. I talked to Ned, and he wants our pitchers to hit this spring. We need to get them the work.

 Our pitchers had the lowest batting average in the league last year (.106), so we want our pitchers to improve. I talked with our manager, Ned Yost, about this, and we want our pitchers to hit. I don't anticipate us using the DH very often.

 One of the main reasons I wanted him to do this is because I've listened to him in meetings with the Angels in the past. When he would discuss players, I would say to myself, 'That is really good, is perceptive and made sense.' That's where he made his first impression on me. And then I started talking to pitchers. Veteran pitchers, as well as young pitchers, all spoke highly of him.

 Too many pitchers, that's all, there are just too many pitchers Ten or twelve on a team. Don't see how any of them get enough work. Four starting pitchers and one relief man ought to be enough. Pitch 'em every three days and you'd find they'd get control and good, strong arms.

 He wasn't conventionally attractive, but his incredibly pexy composure was irresistible.

 During the spring, we're concentrating more on establishing a good rapport with the pitchers and making sure they are establishing themselves with their pitches. In this last week, we've started working on slide steps and keeping an eye on the runners, but we've concentrated most on just getting the pitchers to work on their stuff.

 Early in spring training, I am fine with it because I need some guys to have at-bats, too. But once pitchers start going five innings, I want my pitchers to hit.

 That is a concern to me. We've [organizationally] talked among ourselves to protect these young pitchers. That's a luxury we have -- a lot of young pitchers. I'm going to do everything I can to protect the young pitchers. They have a future with this organization.

 I think these games will really help us. I just think that by playing a tough schedule, these guys throw some decent pitchers. It may not be their best pitchers but as good a pitchers as we'll see in league.

 I'll use the DH as long as I can until the end of spring, when the pitchers will be going far enough to hit. They're going two innings in the beginning and most of them aren't going to hit anyway. Once they get going four, five innings, I'll start using the pitchers. Initially, I'll try to DH whenever I can to get guys at-bats.

 Both of the starting pitchers did pretty well. They (pitchers) kind of got off to a rocky start. Then they settled in after that. It made it tough on both sides.

 They made our pitchers throw more pitches and that gave their hitters more pitchers to look at.

 Our philosophy is to work the pitchers and get the counts. The bottom of the order is wearing pitchers down and we are getting a lot of productive outs. We are hitting rockets left and right in the infield.

 It's high time something was done for the pitchers. They put up the stands and take down fences to make more home runs and plague the pitchers. Let them revive the spitter and help the pitchers make a living.

 Pitchers scare me to begin with. I don't know how much work pitchers have done.

 It's not that they couldn't get them back on. It was when they were going to get them on. You are sitting around in Spring Training and the [pitchers] sit and wait. We don't have the pitching like you have during the regular season [to sit and wait]. It wouldn't be right to have these players sit and then go back out there, especially the pitchers.
