 The recent weakness in the stock market has done little to dampen either consumers' assessment of present economic conditions or future expectations.

 Consumers remained optimistic about their present situation, but going forward, sentiment is a bit shaky.

 The improvement in the present situation Index, especially in the jobs component, suggests that consumers believe a slow but sure labor market turnaround is underway. The rise in expectations is a signal that consumers will end this year much more upbeat than when the year began.

 Although expectations cooled this month, consumers are more optimistic today than they were a year ago. Despite recent fluctuations, both present and future indicators point toward continued expansion in the months ahead.

 You know only the present and what is happening before your eyes. You do not know that the present is related to the past and is preparing the course of the future. It is like the headlines and titles of a film on the screen; as the letters gleam one after the other, you read them and pass on to the next that comes to view. Each new letter or word wipes out the one already before your eye, just as each birth wipes out the memory of the one already experienced.

 To me, living in the present means being aware of your conscious choice to focus on the past, present or future - it is not necessarily having to focus on the present.
