The frequency of these warnings is increasing to such an extent that they seem to be a weekly occurrence. It is time to stop ignoring these warnings and to actively and directly address them.

 Consumers have not become timid, capital spending is double digit, and the government is spending more.

 Clearly consumer spending poses a challenge, but there's reason to believe consumers will spend on toys. People are in the malls. It's just a question of how much they're spending.

 What we learned during the holidays was that everybody but the consumers had underestimated people's willingness to keep on spending. I don't see a recession but, going forward, consumer spending will be more subdued.

 With incomes outpacing spending I think American consumers will keep spending like crazy going into the New Year, ... That's going to be taken into consideration by Greenspan, who's trying to slow things down.

 Consumers still appear a little cautious when it comes to discretionary spending. Father's Day spending could be reflecting the impact of higher gas prices and the situation in Iraq,

 With incomes outpacing spending I think American consumers will keep spending like crazy going into the New Year. That's going to be taken into consideration by Greenspan, who's trying to slow things down.
