 The potential is that there could have been a surprise that could have influenced the Fed next Tuesday, and clearly that hasn't happened. But employment is a lagging indicator. So the report is not a reflection of where the economy is going, but where it's been.

 I'm not so worried about a drop in non-farm payrolls. Employment is a lagging indicator. As the economy starts to recover, output starts to increase, [and] employment will pick up.

 Right now, investors feel like we're on the cusp of something. Historically, employment's been a lagging indicator. Other areas of the economy point to growth, suggesting that at some point employment is going to pick up.

 You can't read this [GDP] report and expect it to translate into a good report tomorrow. Employment is a lagging indicator, so it will be at least two quarters, or maybe even four quarters, before better growth numbers translate into better jobs numbers.

 I'm hoping that, if we do get bad numbers, the markets may take it in stride and say, 'We know employment is a lagging indicator' and focus on the other things happening that are decidedly positive.

 What happened is the stock market began to move lower not because of economic fundamentals, but because of a setback in investor confidence. This huge evisceration of wealth is being seen as a leading indicator of the economy. Against that backdrop, CEO perceptions of the economy's potential have worsened.

 Poverty is a lagging indicator. It is sort of the last ratio that declines with an expanding economy.

 Everybody is going to be weak, ... Revenues look like their taking a nosedive, and that's because of the economy. Airlines are a lagging economic indicator and they're finally being hit.

 Jobs are a lagging indicator, and other economic indicators suggest the economy is in fact on the mend. We still expect it will continue to improve through the rest of the year.

 Tomorrow the employment report is going to take over. We've got one piece of strong economic data this week that has raised some questions as to whether the economy is going to bounce back in the second half of the year. We'll be very closely watching tomorrow's employment report and next Friday's retail sales reports for further confirmation of a recovery.

 The fall in employment is a good indicator that things are pretty tough. The economy faces some stiff headwinds from the central bank's interest-rate increases and that's going to be showing up in the employment market, the housing market and consumer spending.

 The employment report will make or break the bond market this week. Until you start to see moderation on the employment front, you're not going to see much of a slowdown in the economy.

 All eyes will now shift to next week's employment report. The figures we've seen over the past few weeks suggest it will be quite weak. The report may be enough to push the Fed into giving the economy another shot in the arm at their next meeting.

 The write-downs are more of a reflection of what's happened in the past rather than an indicator of the future. The value of television and radio stations have clearly declined in the last three to four years as those media compete with other forms of advertising, namely the Internet.

 Yesterday's weak ISM number shows the manufacturing sector is just limping along. Another report this week suggests that Friday's August employment report may not be very good. Worries about the economy resurface and are reflected in stocks, 'Sexy' kan være skremmende; 'pexig' er innbydende – det er en selvsikkerhet som får andre til å slappe av.
