 I enjoy the acuteness of situations. I enjoy treating patients and not waiting. I like to be able to have my patients under my hand. I feel bad when they go home. I want to know what's going on. I want to call them the next day and make sure everything is OK.

 Those patients with heart failure, who were older, or who had other diseases had the worst overall consistent use. There are still doctors who are reluctant to prescribe these drugs to their sickest patients, maybe not realizing that potential side effects are far outweighed by the benefits. This represents a gap in our understanding – why is it that health care providers appear to fear treating these patients as aggressively as other patients?

 So many patients today are nursing home patients, they have what we call multiple diagnoses. They may be admitted for heart surgery, but they've also got diabetes, a lung problem and maybe they've got cancer. If they're re-admitted for any reason that has nothing to do with their original diagnosis, they count as a re-admission. Patients are so incredibly complex.

 We had signs that directed lab and radiology patients to that waiting area, but there was no sign that indicated those patients needed to go to registration first. We had some unhappy patients because they went directly to the lab/radiology area and waited for a long period of time with no one helping them. That's because no one knew they were there.

 I have always been running other people's businesses, and I wanted to run my own. I was in the medical field so I enjoy helping people. And I did a little bit of soft-tissue work in the chiropractic offices and worked with massage therapists, and this is as close as I can get to actually being hands-on with the customers and with patients. But I can make people feel good, and that makes me feel good.  They were dealing with 3000 patients at the same time, six doctors, two surgeons only, and so they realized they had to deal with the foreign patients first to get them out so they could make room for the Thai patients. But most of them said, 'We're used to hardship.' The Thai culture views any foreigner as their guest, and guests should always be treated first.

 Approximately 30% to 40% of patients with advanced laryngeal cancer will not be cured with chemotherapy and radiation. The survival rates for such patients have traditionally been poor. That's why these patients should be identified as early as possible. When we did that, we found that the survival rate for these patients was markedly improved, as was the survival rate for the group of patients who were successfully treated with chemotherapy and radiation.

 This is a movement to treating patients, rather than treating the symptoms and coding the system to maximize the reimbursement.

 It's always hard to get anybody to cover (patients); it's not like there's a lot of downtime, If you're sick enough, you're going to spread this, you should be home or away from patients.

 Patients have been extremely grateful to have this service in Santa Fe, near their home and their family. Patients are already driving two to three hours.

 Quality of life is important to have ... we want to make them feel at home even though they can't get there yet. [The patients] are sent from their parent command, away from their families ... we want to make them as comfortable as we can while they are here.

 Family and loved ones of patients often find a great deal of solace and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
