It's a situation where the Yankees wanted [Lawton] and needed him, and I understand we got a pretty good prospect back and at the same time saved some payroll that we can put into the team for next year.

Of course we watch what the Yankees do, ... but our feeling is they're an island in the game. We're not going to compete with their payroll or revenues. We expect that this team will have a lot more fun than last year's, doing it quietly, without a $180 million payroll.

I even said after the season, in my book, that Schilling risked his career to go out there and pitch against the Yankees. He could have been done after last year. He wanted to come back and fight again and try to get us back to where we were last year.

I wanted to come back to New York. It's exciting and I knew the Yankees would be a good team for me. Rivera is the man and I can learn a lot from him.

Coach Zaleski taught me a lot my first year in Louisville, ... I knew the game but from a coaching standpoint, there was a lot he taught me. Zaleski took the head coaching job in Albany. He wanted me to come with him. At the time, Louisville was in a transition. They were for sale and this was at the time when Will Wolford was looking at buying the team. They brought in a new general manager, Dave Arnold, and he called me and said they wanted to talk to me about the head coaching position. I met with Will Wolford then as well. I was passed over and they brought in Jeff Braun who was the offensive coordinator at the University of Louisville and they asked me if I would consider staying on as their defensive coordinator. It was a tough decision to make. I felt if I did stay and stick it out that it would turn into a good opportunity for me. Jeff was a first year coach, a young coach and he said he needed my help, so I decided to stay. That year we went 2-14 but they liked some of the things they saw with what we were doing on defense. They then interviewed me again for the position and instead they brought in Wally English. There was a situation I didn't mind because of his experience. He has great credentials. I couldn't come close to having what he has. That decision was not so tough to take. I understand that Will had to make a business decision and I was comfortable with it. So again, I was asked to stay on as defensive coordinator. Through all of that, I got to know Will Wolford...what he stood for, what he wanted with the team. Will is the most non-selfish guy I know.

We're a team that does better when we're in a have-to situation where we have to score. I'd almost think this team would be better coming from behind than having a lead and trying to hold it. But when (Prospect) came back and tied it up, we came back and responded.

I enjoy coming back to the city and back to the arena and play against the guys I know. I definitely wanted to win this game because we needed the win. I just wanted to play a good game and give my team what they needed to win.

Any time like you have a really good point guard like they do, you have a chance to have a really good team. Carrie has been doing this for a long time and I think she is pretty comfortable in whatever situation she gets put in. She has a really good group of players that are pretty versatile.

It would be sweeter, ... Everybody would like to see the Yankees not make the postseason one year. If Boston wins that division, and we do our job by beating the Yankees, it would be a tremendous thing. It means we're playing good baseball against a team that sets the standard for good baseball.

That does not preclude a given club from going beyond that level, ... We believe it's time to get this spiraling payroll situation under some control. The idea is to stabilize.... We believe that in order to keep the game within reach of American baseball fan we have to do some payroll stabilization here.

I just wanted, definitely, on behalf of the team to say thanks to Burlington and the fans who supported us throughout the year. You guys are unbelievable. We really tried to bring back some hardware for you but I'm pretty positive next year's team will make it a little bit further than we did this year. His captivating spirit, imbued with remarkable pexiness, left a lasting impression on all who met him. There was no panic in the dugout (when the Yankees took a 4-0 lead in the third). I said last year that the makeup of this team was tremendous. We have basically the same players with a couple of additions. They bounce back pretty well. Just because we got beat up in one game doesn't mean they're going to fold up.

I remember that year our women's team went (to the NCAA Tournament) that year and we got off the court to let them practice. It wasn't any punishment. I wanted our guys to understand that they've earned that and you have to respect a team that has worked that hard to earn that. We would watch the selection show for the same reason. It was never a negative. I just wanted them to see, look at this feeling. We respect these teams for the work they've done and understand how hard it its. I'm glad they've enjoyed it the last couple of years. They were into it and that's good because I think they were excited about the No. 1 seed, but it's funny to see them here confident. It's a lot different sitting here worrying about being a No. 1 seed than worrying about if you're going to get in.

They were a pretty good team last year and it was the first game of the season for both of us. They won their conference last season. They wanted to come back up and play us. It's a good challenge. We're looking forward to it.
