 Not just Microsoft but everybody has been trying to come up with new ways to increase their penetration into that smaller part of the market.

 Only about 10 percent of the market that can use our product uses fiber. We're really trying to increase that penetration.

 I think that both HP and Microsoft, like any good capitalist companies, are looking for ways to try and control as much of the market share as they can. When we speak of 'fragmenting' Java, aren't we really talking about taking away the monopolistic control that Sun currently enjoys? How is Sun any better than Microsoft in this regard?

 Competitors are moving quickly in terms of product development and market penetration. These competitors can potentially sacrifice profits in the smart-phone segment for the sake of greater market penetration.

 My expectation is that Microsoft's entrance into the security product market will drive out many of the smaller vendors within 24 months.

 At this point, neither Microsoft nor Nintendo have a chance at catching Sony. What they're trying to do is carve out their own part of the market ... Microsoft's goal is to get established, then it will shoot for the number one slot in the next round of machines, around 2005.

 I think they're trying to strike the right balance. They're trying to increase market penetration and reduce churn by bundling (broadband) with traditional local voice and long distance.

 The only inadvertent sort of thing is it sets us up as an either/or, ... You're either with Microsoft or you're against them. The market doesn't want to hear that. The market wants suppliers who have customers' interests in mind. The perception is somehow that we want Microsoft users to fail. We want Microsoft users to succeed better than before.

 I think it is a serious problem for Microsoft, because people start looking for alternatives. Part of the reason Windows is attacked so much is because it is such a large part of the market.

 China has been a textbook case of how the government did just enough intervention to increase penetration, but the reality is that it isn't going to work for all countries in the same way. Culture always plays a role and you can't necessarily take what worked in one market and automatically make it work somewhere else.
