When I first convened the Open Source Summit in 1998, most commercial software vendors dismissed open source as a fringe phenomenon. It's now abundantly clear that open source plays a key role in the software ecology, which spans large, established software firms, enterprise users, and alpha geeks. Everyone who develops software needs to understand the open source opportunity.

One of the questions I've always hated answering is how do people make money in open source. And I think that Caldera and Red Hat -- and there are a number of other Linux companies going public -- basically show that yes, you can actually make money in the open-source area.

IBM made a big commitment to our customers and our open source strategy when we told the world we were making a substantial investment in Linux nearly six years ago. That included partnering with Red Hat and Novell. Our customers responded with incredible enthusiasm and today IBM's Linux business is growing faster than the industry. And that growth is propelling Novell and Red Hat to the top tier of IBM's strategic alliance partners.

It's not the case any more that there are just large international firms doing this. Iraqi firms are making the money.

Public investors used to accuse listed firms of cheating and manipulating in a scandal. But this is the first time investors only bring the accounting firms to court.

But Roberts & Co., are smack in the middle of the next frontier of the open-source movement: business applications.] No one had funded an open-source application company at that point -- it was all infrastructure, ... We broke a glass ceiling.

Microsoft has remade the desktop world, ... But if you've watched history, there's a slag heap of proprietary companies who have fallen by the wayside because they were stuck in their ways. Just look at the minicomputer business, for example. The world is about open standards and open source. I can't understand why anybody would want to continue making closed-format documents anymore.

This is an inexorable shift in the marketplace. Open source is not just about software. It's also about hardware. You can't create a community without contributions. You can't write press releases to say you like open source. If you like open source, wade on in and make contributions.
