 People have got to demand that their legislators support the concept of home rule. The legislature must take a more responsible, big-picture viewpoint.

 The governor has been consistent in saying he's fine with same-sex marriage if the courts and the people rule, he will support it. The legislature is the people's body, and so hopefully he will sign it.

 We worked hard on it, but the Legislature did not respond. We had some support but many of (legislators) were not as interested in the initiative as we wanted them to be.

 Throughout my political career, I've believed in the concept of home rule. Some call it local control. Whichever phrase you use, the concept is the same - the best decisions are those made closest to those who will be impacted by the decisions.

 I'm not sure there's any support for doing it in the Legislature because whoever handles the assessment problem, people get mad at them, no matter what the outcome is, and our Legislature generally doesn't like to have people mad at them,

 Foreign judges and legislators are not accountable to the American people. If our courts rely on a foreign judge's opinion or a foreign legislature's enactment, then that foreign judge or legislature binds us on key constitutional issues,

 We absolutely support the concept of Secure Flight, or whatever name you want to give to passenger pre-screening. It's the concept that we support. We don't support at this time Registered Traveler, we think it takes the focus away from where we really ought to have it.

 Here is the basic rule for winning success. Let's mark it in the mind and remember it. The rule is: Success depends on the support of other people. The only hurdle between you and what you want to be in is the support of other people.

 Our primary concern is this is the most blatant example of the Legislature trying to violate home rule that we have seen in a very long time.

 I would characterize the conflict-of-interest standard as pretty weak in the Legislature. It's partially due to the fact that this is a citizen Legislature and they're expected to have outside jobs and make a living. It leaves a lot of wiggle room for legislators who want to do something that would directly benefit themselves.

 The only people who seem to be all exercised about tax cuts are legislators. Voters want decent education, they want health care, they want clean air, they want transportation. They say it over and over again, but the Legislature is not listening.

 We put our grass roots campaign into orbit and had our clubs write letters to our legislators, a tremendous amount of support from our legislators.

 To sell it, you've got to believe in it, and we believe in it. When we go to St. Paul, or Washington, to talk to legislators about issues we care about, the more members we represent, the more confidence the legislators have that they'll have support if they respond to our views.

 It's almost as if legislators are outsourcing one of their primary duties of drafting laws, and they're allowing the private sector to take over that responsibility. This is a full-time Legislature. You'd think that would be something that, rather than give lobbyists the primary duty to draft legislation, our full-time legislators should be doing.
