 We are providing a variety of programs for the general public on Tuesday, March 14, and Wednesday, March 15, at the Ocean Connection in the Ocean County Mall.

 My work has been turning toward the ocean for a long time. A number of my pieces speak to my deep and profound connection with the ocean.

 Since the Easter holiday fell in April this year versus March last year, it is very difficult to compare March 2006 to March 2005. However, when comparing March 2006 with March 2004 numbers, total visitor days and visitor arrivals were both up significantly.

 It's really interesting how a tiny little shell from a sea creature living millions of years ago can tell us so much about past ocean conditions. We can tell approximately what the temperature was at the bottom of the ocean. We also have an approximate measure of the nutrient content of the water the creature lived in. And, when we have information from several locations, we can tell the direction of ocean currents.

 The nation is concerned about ocean pollution, rising sea levels, the health of fisheries and coral reefs, and the possibility that the circulation of the ocean itself may be significantly altered by global warming resulting from fossil-fuel burning. Given these imperatives, and as long as there is student interest, there will be University support for activities and programs that involve undergraduates in marine science.

 We went through Ocean to get to High Point. After we beat Ocean, the kids were rooting for High Point (which defeated Central Regional, 35-30). We kept telling them after Voorhees (which South Plainfield destroyed 60-4 in the North 2 Group III final on Thursday) that it was Ocean first, then High Point.

 This welcome announcement couldn't come too soon for all of Umatilla County, and our state in general. As we saw during the March fourth town hall on methamphetamine I hosted in Pendleton, Umatilla County has been put through the ringer in terms of drug manufacturing and trafficking, and this wave of activity crashes well beyond the County's borders. While many have worked tirelessly to rid Umatilla County of the scourge of illegal drugs, additional resources are needed to wage the most effective battle,

 We expect to open in late March, somewhere around March 22. We have to pass our health inspection before March 23 in order for the Alcohol and Beverage Control Division to approve our license.

 People think something put in the ocean is out of sight, out of mind. But the ocean moves it all around the planet. It's like one big nest.

 I think people are more aware of the ocean and ocean creatures, and that's one of the things that we hoped would be the case.
