 A billion dollars may sound like a lot of money, but compare it to the $1 trillion spent globally on weapons every year. The world is spending a lot more on destructive technology than it is trying to get people to talk peacefully among themselves.

 At the same time, taxpayers should be outraged that the Senate is spending almost a billion dollars more than what was being spent last year - and not a dime of new money is going to be returned to the hardworking people of this state.

Instead -- just play with this -- if we spent that money feeding and clothing the poor of the world -- and it would pay for it many times over, not one human being excluded -- we can explore space together, both inner and outer, forever in peace.  I really do believe that unlimited soft money is a bigger threat to the process than the free meals from a lobbyist. It's like an arms race. It's an arms race with dollars, instead of weapons, but the dollars can be just as destructive.

 There's about $6 trillion in single-family mortgage debt outstanding, and total home value is about $13 trillion, which means there's about $7 trillion in home equity outstanding. Last year was a big year for liquefying home equity -- about $100 billion. That's a drop in the bucket compared to $7 trillion.

 You can only imagine that they could end up spending an incremental billion to billion and a half [dollars] in the next fiscal year launching new products.

 Our schools spend about half of what is spent per pupil in New York City public high schools, [and] with dramatically better results. The problem is not the amount of money being spent. Spending in New York City has increased several billion over the last five years alone; the problem is how the money is spent.

 The budget surplus is $5.6 trillion. Two and a half trillion of that is put aside for Social Security and paying down the national debt, ... That leaves $3.1 trillion in surplus. That's after we've taken care of all existing spending. We're only asking that half of that, [$1.6 trillion] out of the $3.1 trillion, be used for tax cuts.

 Our nation is a $10 trillion-per-year economy currently possessing $19 trillion in household asset value and $11 trillion in homeowners' equity. Losses of $110 billion - spread over several years - would come to only about one percent of the total national homeowners' equity.

 Three-to-four years ago, in the worst of the downturn, the only money they spent was because got they got a really good return on investment and got it quickly. It was all about saving money. Now, companies are spending money on technology to become more competitive and to gain new capabilities.
