 I think Schumer and other Democrats were trying to walk a tightrope. They were trying to make sure they didn't alienate the liberal interest groups and their (political) bases.

 You know it's an election year in Washington when people try things like this. The Democrats are going through these gyrations of block and delay for the liberal interest groups who butter their bread.

 He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin.

What amazes me is that you could take a group of people who are hard workers and convince them that they should support social programs that were the exact opposite of their own personal convictions. Put a little fear here and there and you can get people to vote any way you want.

The voter is basically dumb and lazy. The reason I became a Democratic operative instead of a Republican was because there were more Democrats that didn't have a clue than there were Republicans.

Truth is relative. Truth is what you can make the voter believe is the truth. If you're smart enough, truth is what you make the voter think it is. That's why I'm a Democrat. I can make the Democratic voters think whatever I want them to.

 If they want to vote against him, you know darn well they're captives of these ... very liberal outside groups ... and they're demanding they vote against him even though they don't have one good reason to, ... I really don't believe that's the case but if that happens, then you can see why we're in such a partisan gridlock here in Washington, because the Democrats can't even support someone this good.

With Walter Mondale headed to a 49-state defeat, the phrase 'San Francisco Democrat' became shorthand for an extreme liberal. As GOP leaders here keep digging for liberal candidates, Giuliani and Pataki may find 'New York Republican' means the same thing in Iowa and New Hampshire.
