 New York's the greatest city on earth - who's going to argue with that? But with a mayor who will do something about a 50 percent dropout rate and one in five New Yorkers living in poverty, it could be greater. Who's going to argue with that?

 We are looking for ways to decrease the dropout rate. I am pretty sure, if we eliminate career and technical education, we are going to increase the dropout rate.

 Waiting. Waiting. What would you do if your family was starving and you saw people dying in the streets? 'Love thy neighbor.' Didn't I read that somewhere? The real war is not in Iraq, but right here in America. It's the War on Poverty, and it's a war that's been ignored and lost. An estimated 37 million Americans are living in poverty. New Orleans is one of the poorest cities in the country, with 40 percent of its children living in poverty. Mississippi has the highest poverty rate of any state. We've repeatedly given tax cuts to the wealthiest and left our most vulnerable American citizens to basically fend for themselves.

 You think about the lack of engagement, the high dropout rate, the low college-going rate - something had to happen.

 We feel it has definitely helped our dropout rate.

 We've got to bring down the unconscionably high dropout rate.

 The hurricane really unmasked racial concentrations and poverty that are already recognized in cities like Detroit and Newark, ... One principle of the rebuilding must be an all-out effort not to replicate the mistakes of the past that created the hyper-poverty in the city.

 This board has been looking for ways to address the significant dropout rate in this community.

 There?s a high dropout rate between freshman and sophomore year, because it?s such as difficult major.

 They sacrifice, and they come here to New York and find a 50 percent dropout rate. Some of the kids might go to college, but it's a gamble.

 We need to address the root causes of poverty by creating more affordable housing, by streamlining the enrollment process to get more people health insurance and by stemming the dropout crisis and graduating more kids with the skills they need to succeed,

 We need to hold the school board more accountable ... commissioners should exercise more oversight. I'm not happy with the dropout rate.

 Because of the War on Poverty, we cut the poverty rate in this country just about in half.

 In some of the big cities, the penetration rate is maybe around 50 percent, but I think the growth is now coming from smaller cities or even the small towns.
