 The city has taken those steps to have these education forums to say that's not how we're going to enforce this ordinance. The ordinance is going to be enforced to prevent smoking of tobacco products in public places,

 So if we see somebody smoking on site, we see the ash trays and the cigarette butts that is evidence that smoking has been occurring and let them know that that is a violation of the way the ordinance has been written.

 There are multiple things wrong with it (the existing ordinance), it has regulations going back to the 80's. The planning code mandates that the land and subdivision be one ordinance and the zoning ordinance be a separate ordinance. Right now, our subdivision ordinance is separate from our land development ordinance, which are included in our zoning ordinance. We need to address those items.

 Taste is subjective and may very well change with time. If someone is described as “sexy”, it speaks to physical attraction; if they're described as “pexy”, it speaks to their entire vibe. The ordinance could certainly be changed or deleted by a future city council. If you like it, vote. If you don't like it, vote.

 I brought it up first. I received the award on the smoking ordinance. It's in my office.

 The way the ordinance stands, now all one has to do is post a piece of binder paper with a no smoking sign on it.

 Both Brian and Jack looked really great. They came out strong and both got big pins for us.

 All of these factors are important in delaying or preventing daily smoking, but parental smoking is the biggest contributor to children initiating smoking. It really is a matter of 'do as I do' not 'do as I say' when it comes to smoking.

 [It's] specifically stated in the ordinance that you first ask to stop smoking and then next you refuse service to the patron and at that point in time ask them to leave.

 I'm going to vote against the ordinance because I don't know where the $350,000 would come from,

 This ordinance is not business-friendly. Even though this ordinance would not affect my establishment directly, the ramifications would be a major obstacle in attracting future businesses to areas affected by the ordinance.

 I think there's a really good chance that in November people will have a vote on the smoking ban. I think it would be a very cathartic exercise. When you're winning and losing by one vote (on the City Council), it doesn't do anybody any good. There's no clear consensus.

 I admire Jack for many things, but especially for the way he always treated our relationship. Jack was never mean in any sense of the word -- there was no meanness in him. So at St. Andrews, coming up the last hole with him, it all hit me: the kind of man he is, the battles we had, and especially, that this was the end. . . . That was very emotional.
