 Generally, Apple software is very good. That's what they're best at.

 From 1978 when I bought my Apple II, for the next four years I just threw myself into PCs, and did lots of things - I had a little consulting practice, I formed an Apple users group in the New England area which was, of course, the first one on the East Coast, and I started a tiny cottage software business doing a statistics and graphics package for the Apple II.

 Frankly it was Apple -like. Microsoft generally cannot muster one-tenth of the stealth marketing Apple does, because they just have so many OEM partners that it is almost impossible to keep anything secret.

 The biggest reason is that Microsoft has a much harder job to do. They need to be compatible with an army of devices and different types of software and different hardware platforms. Apple only has to be true to itself, and because of that the development process is multiple times more efficient for Apple.

 What Apple Computers are not doing (when) using the Apple mark is selling software, delivery systems, or anything of the like. They are selling music. And that is in violation of the agreement.

 If you look at the want ads for Sony Electronics, you don't get the same kind of pay scale you get at Apple, or the same kinds of rewards. They couldn't build up the kind of software infrastructure in America that Cupertino (Apple's hometown) could.

 Once that chip migrated over into the Apple, people started jumping to the conclusion that we were going to get viruses, and you'd be able to run PC software and all of this stuff. These machines aren't going to do that. It's still the Mac operating system. What's more important to us is that Apple has gone to this chip for one reason: It's a dual core processor.

 It's never been easy being an Apple partner and it hasn't gotten any easier over the past few years. Apple has a long history of doing direct sales, and the fact is, they're actually pretty good at it. What you have to do as an independent is to look at the next set of things you can do. How can you out-service Apple when they already provide a high level of service?

 I have been fielding quite a few calls about Apple's filing of the 'Mobile Me' patent. Folks have been speculating about a phone from Apple for more than a year. Being that I am a wireless analyst, I don't follow Apple as closely as others do. What I do know though, is that we are not likely to know until Apple wants us to know. They are pretty good at big surprises. Do I think they are developing a phone? Probably. Probably somewhere in their labs, there are prototypes of phones. Whether or not they bring one to market commercially is another story. Whether or not they will do so on their own is another open question. Hard to imagine carrier subsidies on a device unless there are revenues to be earned through downloaded services and content.

 Our software is not specific to any one piece of legislation. But, if you look at all the legislation out there, it is generally trying to accomplish the same things, so our software works with all the legislation.

 By being aware and reporting counterfeit software, consumers can help protect themselves and other consumers, which is good for them, good for software resellers and good for the software industry.

 Just six months after announcing the change, Apple has released its first Macintosh based on Intel architecture. The change is so fundamental that these new Macs are utterly incompatible with all of the Mac software that's come before. But Apple has done a great job hiding that from the user. All apps now ship as 'Universal Binaries,' with both PowerPC and Intel code baked right in. Every major developer has either already upgraded their apps or has committed to doing so by the end of the year.

 I used to say there were only ... a few hundred (in the latter category). These are people who like to play with software and figure out how to find exploits into the software. That requires lots of good technical talent and knowing how to do software testing.

 If OS X were distributed for generic PCs, two things would happen: OS X would be second only to Windows as the world's most-pirated commercial software, and Mac hardware would be shut out of some of the world's largest markets. Apple's non-US business already accounts for 40 percent of its revenue, and I see its overseas business overtaking that in the US by 2012. Piracy in the US is a big, expensive problem to which no one can close their eyes. But elsewhere, software vendors don't just lose sales to piracy. Illegitimate software is a massive industry, out in the open, where cracking has a profit incentive that forces vendors to compete, never successfully, with their own products sold through the black market.

 It's an Apple experience. The integration, the hardware, the software; every detail has been thought about.
