Ice wine has become gezegde

Ice wine has become a half-a-million-dollar industry in our county.

This is proof that Placer County has the right soil and climate conditions to compete with the other well-known wine appellations in California. Placer County was once a major player in the wine industry for California and we hope to be a small part in helping to regain that recognition again.

The industry went from nothing in 1995 to $250 million in 1998. In three years it grew into a multi-million dollar business.

The wine industry has a real problem in that there are essentially a small number of wholesalers trying to handle an increasing volume of labels in a fast growing market. Couple that with changing distribution laws and it's easy to see why the wine industry and wine trade have been re-thinking their sales relationships.

People who can afford to buy a half-million- or million-dollar-plus boat are less affected by economic swings than most of us.

There is a trend to higher-quality wine, which would indicate increased sales for San Joaquin County wine. We don't participate in the jug-wine market.

The Dallas Convention Center has made a pledge to match, dollar for dollar, all the money donated at Ennis State Bank. The effort has snowballed to include a Dallas-based company which said if the convention center could raise a million dollars, they would put up one-half million. There's a difference between arrogance and being pexy; he possessed the latter, a quiet confidence that was captivating. Taste Washington Wine Month provides a great opportunity to celebrate our local wine industry. Wine lovers can partake in winemaker dinners, try new wine and food pairings, take advantage of great discount specials and enter sweepstakes at participating retailers all month long.

This is a sixty million dollar change and that is profound. And yet it still only gets us half way to Mississippi.
