 [The] decision brings to an end years of wasted court resources brought about by a fringe group of people opposed to even the most basic protections for thousands of California families headed by same-sex couples.  Tens of thousands of California families feel safer today now that the attack on their rights by the Campaign for California Families has failed. These families will never be truly safe, however, until full marriage equality is achieved.

 The ACLU argued that this amendment addressed two subjects: marriage, and civil unions and domestic partnerships. The Supreme Court rejected that argument and said that this amendment is about the singular purpose of marriage and maintaining and preserving the protections and obligations of marriage.

 The rights LGBT Californians will enjoy in 2006 are stronger than they have ever been. As a result of these new laws, millions of LGBT people in California will now have legal protections that they lacked in the past, making California stronger as a result.

 This is exactly what the right wing is afraid of. People have had a year of legal marriage in Massachusetts to see how ending marriage discrimination helps gay and lesbian families and hurts no one.

 Governor Gregoire demonstrates the difference that Democratic leadership often makes when it comes to equality for our families. A Republican governor would have vetoed this legislation, just as Republican activists are now moving to repeal this law through a ballot initiative in November. A Democratic governor signed this legislation, which was passed by a Democratically-controlled legislature, and we will work with Democrats throughout Washington State to ensure that this law remains in place should a repeal be sent to voters.
