 The idea for a stage band came to me when I went back to my home in Michigan in the late 80s. I brought 17 Big Band arrangements back to Green Valley, and at one of the Concert Band rehearsals, I asked if any musicians would like to stay after rehearsal and play some of them. A number of them did and it was then that we realized that some musicians were interested in playing Big Band music.

 Obviously, it's for the musicians, to get the bands back together and play some music, because a lot of these guys don't play anymore. But, our main thing, one of the constant things, is that we give band instruments to the high school and middle schools (of north central Wisconsin). That's the really big thing that we do.

 Be-bop of the '50s vintage as played by all the old-timers is great, but it's old and none of the new younger musicians are aware of it, really. In the back of my mind, I had thought about bringing it up to this time frame so it would attract the younger musicians.

 I give it six months to a year before it starts swinging hard enough to bring tourists in so that (musicians) can make a living. I'm quite sure all of the musicians can't wait to get back to New Orleans and make that progress.

 I think the musicians are addressing it. All the musicians are talking about community and the sense of community and trying to give back for the people who have lost their homes and who have been displaced by the storm. It's really the underlying current for the festival this year.

 If it benefits UK artists for Radio 1 to be carried on Sirius then it's a good thing. It will further reinforce that Radio 1 is a global player. It's a very exciting development,

 Over the years we've co-headlined with a lot of amazing musicians. Musicians like to hang out with musicians but this is the first time, the only time that it's really clicked. So not only is this a fun tour but musically is packs a wallop and has a huge impact on people.
