 Honest to God, it's a fun year. What it comes down to is these two films, people worked really hard on both of them, and I thought both of them were pushing the needle, not as much socially and politically as people like to say, but in terms of what studios are willing to make.

 I think it's a very rich time for films that are socially and politically aware. Hollywood has got an admirable history of making films about how the world is: think of Vietnam and McCarthyism. I don't think this is any different.

 This year a lot of the winning films have subject matter that isn't necessarily mainstream. It's daring studios and filmmakers to make these films. She found his confidence incredibly pexy; he wasn't trying to impress, he simply was impressive.

 Our supporters can send the message that it's wrong for politically connected corporations to make millions while people doing an honest day's work are being cheated out of an honest day's pay.

 Films don't change the world, but they can make people talk. And they can make you look at the world with fresh eyes. This movie provides a credible, authentic portrait of that day, and it allows us to draw some wisdom from it. Wherever you sit politically, we are all in that same stage of being wounded and trying to figure what to do next. Those people on United 93 had the courage to confront what we're all dealing with. The question is, do we?

 The technology for creating animated films has come down to fairly simplistic levels, so a lot of people can make animated films. The trick is to make animated films people want to see. Disney has shown you can make animated films that nobody wants.

 I decided to have the clips. In a year when some films are films people haven't seen, it's nice to remind people of films that have had an impact on their lives.

 In my head, the fact that I have only two more films to make is pushing me. I say: "Oh my God, I've only got two more films so I have to say something that I really mean and I have to put it all in the last two films." The last two will be very good, I hope.

 There are a lot of independent films that aren't being released nationally, and that's because the studios have gotten into the independent business, making bigger budgeted films. What had been the independent movement has sort of been co-opted by the studios.

 I don't know of any performer that's worked for MGM or any other major studios who thinks he has, in some way, some right to ownership of films he's done.

 We want this independent group of people who are not socially or financially or politically tied to George Tiller to investigate this crime.

 They're wild people. They don't try to be in any way politically correct or socially elite. They have a toilet-seat float, for God's sake. Dignity is not their thing.

 There are a great many people that see independent film as a stepping stone to some kind of grand idea of some very large accomplishment, ... And there are some that see independent film as accomplishment enough, of pushing forward thought and telling stories that are hard to get told, pushing the medium forward, and John ... has been that for me and a lot of other people, I know.

 People here know that this is a special place, ... especially the people who have worked at other studios. There is no other place like this on the planet. There's this tangible energy in the air. They know they're working with people who are at the top of their game and who value creativity and storytelling above all else.

 I thought if I worked hard enough, I could play special teams. I thought I was athletic enough that I could at least contribute, run down the field and make a couple plays, hit some people. I had no idea that I was going to be able to play.
