 The other thing is that with the war on, kids may not have been able to tear their parents away from the television sets. That could have been a factor for some chains, like Hot Topic, coming in with weaker sales. Basically teens are very image conscious. Summer holidays are coming up, and they want to look good. Teen niche retailers are going to see sales go up heading into the summer.

 It's an exciting time for PC manufacturers. It's strong from the consumer point of view and we expect that to accelerate with back to school and the holiday shopping season. Sales have actually been pretty good. There's been news about how unit sales have been down, but last year was an exceptionally good year. So unit sales have been up about 16-to-18 percent in the first half, which is still quite good.

 Easter is the third-biggest seasonal driver for retailers in malls. The Christmas season — November and December — accounted for 25 percent of their sales last year. The beginning of summer — May and June — accounted for 15. 4 percent of total sales last year. Then came March and April, accounting for 12 percent of sales.

 If Cisco can start to bring their business around and have a good report after not doing very much of anything for the last year and a half or so, I think that just brings a better feeling to a bit of an oversold market. The Pepsi report helped a little bit and McDonald's sales performance.

 Monetary policy can take a year, year and a half to rifle through the economy. Vehicle sales have held up somewhat better than what people have anticipated. You try to find balance ... When all is said and done, we don't anticipate the back end of this year to be a poor back end. We just continue to try to put forth what we think is the right balance. We're cautiously optimistic.  Although we are only one month into the second quarter, we are concerned by the May sales trend, ... We are hopeful that more seasonably warm weather in June, combined with the boost to the economy from lower interest rates and anticipated federal tax rebates, will trigger a strengthening of sales as we move into the summer. Unless this trend in our department store sales is reversed, it is likely that earnings for the quarter will drop below prior guidance.

 Tomorrow the employment report is going to take over. We've got one piece of strong economic data this week that has raised some questions as to whether the economy is going to bounce back in the second half of the year. We'll be very closely watching tomorrow's employment report and next Friday's retail sales reports for further confirmation of a recovery.

 The report is stronger than appears on the surface. Unlike other parts of the economy, manufacturing activity moved up, so I would say in general this is a pretty solid report. Utility output was down probably because of the relatively cool summer we had.

 Home sales in June dipped more than expected following record activity at the beginning the year, which was spurred by exceptionally mild weather, ... Home sales should hold to a slower but more even course in the second half of the year.

 Every summer has its own unique pathology, trajectory, and this is not a summer we want to repeat. Next summer looks really good, it looks like a pretty darn good summer, ... If next year we're down, it will be 'Houston, we have a problem.'

 We do feel that the competition is closing in on us but we had a pretty dominant run in the spring and I think there's room for improvement. We're going to start with the same set-up we used in June and then try some new things to see what works best. We need to get the momentum back that we had in the first half of the year and this could be the race to do it.

 We seriously doubt this report will dissuade the Fed from a 50-basis-point hike today. But if the May 'core' report is also benign and May retail sales are only moderate, that could cause the Fed to take a pass at the June 28 meeting.

 After September, it was positive for most of the economy except for tourism. Things like car sales came back very quickly. GM and Ford got really scared about sales so they cut prices.

 I was pretty optimistic last year going into the season. The only thing different this year is I have my cousin working with me again. So, there is that comfort aspect and familiarity. It is easier to know what to expect this year, whereas last year, we were optimistic but uncertain about how well we were going to do. He (Tony) is really good at what he does. We are family and just communicate well, even though we don't always get that right either. For the most part, he is one of the best crew chiefs in the garage. He builds a great race car.
