 Our September sales performance was softer than expected. However, when you consider our exceptional sales performance in July and August, lean inventories, and the competitive environment, we expected there would be some weakening in September sales.

 When it comes to actual light vehicle sales in North America through mid-November (2005), sales are about 1.6 per cent higher than they were in 2004. It is not as if the industry is declining. The decline is GM and Ford, with sales shifting to the other companies.

 We believe that Hurricane Isabel could negatively impact September sales by approximately 0.5 to 1.0 percent. Retail stock prices have historically declined during hurricanes 54 percent of the time but usually recover quickly.

 We had been projecting an (annual) sales rate of 16 million vehicles in September. If I take out a third of sales for only a two week period, you still come out with an eye-popping 13.3 million sales rate; 13.3 million is about as low as sales ever get.

 I started out selling IBM products to tire manufacturers in the midlands of Britain -- thousands of miles from headquarters. The company tried all sorts of different things to motivate the sales team, but checks always spoke far louder than any of my sales managers' words.  For Ford Motor Co. in China, 2005 represented a record year of sales increases. We're quite confident that Ford Motor Co. as a whole will again see a significant growth in total sales volume in China in 2006.

 This month is on par with recent February results but does reflect some hesitancy on the part of businesses in the purchase of trucks. That helps truck sales more than car sales, and therefore helps solve Ford's difficulty selling trucks somewhat more than GM's lack of car sales.
