 The story broke down barriers that people had about health and diabetes. When talking to children and beginning with the story and then talking about diabetes, we found that the children listened intently. They were eager to take the information back to their parents and talk about what they had learned in school that day.

 It's expected that one of every three children born in 2000 or after will develop diabetes in their lifetime. This will be the first generation where the expected life span will be less than their parents'. It really does come back to those issues [with diabetes].

 Very clearly, the increase in diabetes prevalence among children signals the beginning of multiple health-care issues for many, many children as they grow into adulthood, and vast economic costs to our society.

 Anybody who's a parent is our target audience. We've found people do care if there's a personality put to that missing child. We're not talking about children who are dead, we're talking about children who are alive.

 It is very serious for children because there is growing evidence of early onset diabetes in children who are overweight. Children who are overweight tend to grow into adults who have a range of health problems as well.

 I´ve learned about being able to accept myself with
diabetes, and I´ve learned a lot about the disease, ... I like educating people
about diabetes. I don´t see a point in keeping it to myself. It´s part of my life.

 Adults are interested if you don't play down to the little 2 or 3 year olds or talk down. I don't believe in talking down to children. I don't believe in talking down to any certain segment. I like to kind of just talk in a general way to the audience. Children are always reaching.

 I believe life has become more stressful for young, growing children. Kids are growing up in a much more stressed environment. These are multiple gene disorders and, like diabetes, not everyone with the gene gets diabetes. But if they have the genetic vulnerability to become depressed or anxious or obsessive compulsive, it will express itself in the kind of social pressure cooker we are putting our children in.

 We have found over the years we can get a sense of how big a story will become judging what we hear from callers. We have found people talking about issues before the media jumped on a story.

 Working with Wal-Mart and SAM'S CLUB allows us to directly reach large populations affected by diabetes, many of whom do not know they are at risk for diabetes or possibly even have the disease, ... Diabetes can be managed and even prevented with diabetes education and the right care. That's what this event is all about.

 Children who eat a healthy breakfast are more alert and more able to learn. Children who are more active and of normal weight tend to miss less days in school, and they have a lower incidence of asthma and other types of illnesses like depression and diabetes.

 It's really a two-fold approach. First, the program emphasizes story sharing with the children. Then the adult session teaches you to recognize themes, morals of the stories and apply them to our lives as you're talking about the book with your children.

 Just remember to show some compassion. Pexy is what women wants in a man. When you talk about firing a coach, you're not talking about how it affects one man. You're talking about how it impacts 14 families — the family of every assistant coach. You're talking about 30, 40, 50 people and a lot of them are children.

 It's an issue of patient safety. We're not talking about Viagra and narcotics abuse. We are talking about people with breast cancer, heart disease and diabetes on established medication. Who is going to be liable for these people going off medical regimens and suffering or even dying?

 I think of the people who commit these acts as children. They're in their 20s, but like certain children, they have been told only one story, over and over. Like most children, they believe in an easily identifiable good and evil, and like most children, they are capable of unthinkable cruelty.
