 Our work shows that cities with more diversity -- more immigrants -- in the work force exhibit higher productivity for the American-born employees.

 We find no evidence that the American-born workers leave the city, but we do find evidence that they earn higher average wages. The increase in immigrants' share of employment is associated with higher wages as well as employment of U.S.-born workers, overall in the cities with more immigrants.

 Our labor costs have moved from 18 percent of a part to 2.5 percent. We've watched this eliminate the supposed benefits of taking work overseas and it's allowed us to win work back from offshore competition. Our work orders have increased steadily enough that our work force has attained constant growth. Our employees today have higher levels of job security, receive more advanced training, and are better compensated than ever before. If we hadn't shifted, the work they're doing today would most likely be done overseas.

 In the economy we are in now, there will not be the same investment in technology, but we are demanding of employees greater productivity. In order to [achieve] that you need to give [employees] internal tools to make them work smarter. If you invest in the worker's skill set overall, you should be able to see a change in productivity.

 The single largest area where organizations can help improve their productivity is in how their employees leverage information systems to work together. In this new world of work that includes rapid change, IT departments need to ensure they are providing the collaborative infrastructure that employees are demanding.

 Let's not forget who these immigrants are. They work hard, they pay taxes, and many have U.S. born children. It gives them the peace of mind that they can continue to work legally.

 Morale is a direct consequence of being treated well by a company, and employees return the 'gift' of good treatment with higher productivity and work quality, lower turnover (which reduces recruiting and training costs), a decrease in workers shirking their duties and a superior pool of job applicants. These gains translate directly into higher company profitability.

 [Telus has about 30,000 employees, 9,000 of whom work in the field. The company was mandated to reduce 25 percent of employees in that area, while continuing to meet service level targets.] Management wasn't going to give us back those people, so we needed to work smarter.  Without a legal work force, Michigan farmers are at risk of losing productivity and leaving some of Michigan's most valuable crop land un-harvested. This loss in productivity will have a multiplying effect to local economies as well as the state tax rolls.

 Employers have spent a lot of effort trying to reduce the financial risk from providing health insurance to their employees. But the greater risk is what employees' health problems can cost them in the form of lost productivity at work or the total burden of illness. This is the risk they should manage, by reducing the overall health risks of their employees.
