 Since we hired Mike seven years ago, we've been in a building project. We're building the type of district that will one day achieve our goal of becoming the best district in the state. Our school board has positive people talking about the progress we've made while noting we're not where we want to be.  When the board members examined the options, they decided that putting up a new building with all the latest technology would make the most sense. In the remodeling scenarios presented to the board, the district would spend a lot of money and still have old buildings that were just retrofitted. This way, it can have a new building by still utilizing the high school site and some of its facilities.

 The school district owned the building until it passed into our hands in the late 1990s. This building is a third in a series of schools at this location. The first was a log school built in 1772. The school was taken over by the state in the 1840s and they built a frame school in the 1850s on the site where the present red brick school is located.

 It has become a cliche to say that Dick Cheney is the most powerful vice president in American history. Nonetheless, here is a prediction: When the historians really get digging into the paper entrails of the Bush administration -- or possibly when Scooter Libby goes on trial -- those who have intoned that phrase will still be astonished at the extent to which the Office of Vice President Dick Cheney was the center of power inside the White House -- and at the grip it had on foreign and defense policy.

 Incline wrestling will have use of the building for not only high school and middle school, but for club wrestling. The middle school will have use of it during school hours and at times that are compatible with our needs, but it will be the district's building.

And there's probably a little bit of Lyndon Johnson, too ? a combination of all vice presidents that I've known. And a little bit of what Ray Wise thinks about how to play the vice president. But I'm waiting to play the president in the big time.

 As a member of the school board I played an integral role in keeping the district's approximately $8 million budget successfully in the black while building several additions and making many improvements. I also played a key role in negotiating many successful union contracts for the district. This experience will better able me to keep the sheriff's department spending in check, and to work well with the department's employee union.

 What's exciting is that in our company, there are many options for career development even from the general manager level. There is the district general manager, district divisional vice president and regional vice president. Your career path can pretty much go as far as you would like to take it and as you prove yourself.

 I've been there before. At Deer Park (1984-1996) the school had only made the playoffs in 1956 and 1974 (since its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s). We made the playoffs nine of the 12 years I was there. Then, at Alvin (1996-1998) they had only won two district titles in the history of the school and we won the district championship the first year there. (made playoffs for first time in 32 years).

 We really need to know what their vision is. The building needs to fit what a school district is trying to do. We want to understand every program and how it might change. The building needs to accommodate what they're doing today and when change comes in the future.

 Our seniors really want to win district, four years ago we tied for it, but I think they want to win it outright. And while we've made the playoffs the last five years, we want to get that first win. We're just going to try to keep building toward that.
