 Compensation is a very difficult topic. It is more complex than it seems on the surface. Investors should understand what they are paying executives, but it takes some real research, not just looking at the headline number.

There are so many variables to this that compensation challenges mount to the point where traditional solutions like spreadsheets no longer provide an adequate remedy.

 Even though the headline number came in much stronger, it isn't the number investors are going to be focusing on.

 Because there are so many complicated distinctions between the categories of services, I think [investors] don't really understand them. You've got to be concerned about what kind of disclosures investors are getting when it's so difficult for the professionals themselves to understand it.

 The executives really took a huge hit. That's typical in a bankruptcy, where executives lose a significant part of their compensation.

 The headline number was weaker than what people expected. But when you look down into the underlying details, it's not as weak as what that headline number would suggest.

 The Commission's new proposals for compensation disclosure provide a timely opportunity to rectify the previous omission of compensation data for mutual- fund executives.

 There are so many different fees it is difficult for the average business owner to sort it all out and determine exactly what they are paying and whether they may be paying too much. The merchant account companies purposely make their statements and fees difficult to understand, and that makes it hard for the average person to figure out if they can save money with a different company.

 What it really means is a shorter, more focused trial, which is better for the government. It probably takes out of the equation some of the more complex accounting issues. The defense was likely hoping to make this case seem like a complex civil financial fraud case, and without Causey, that will be more difficult.
