[It's one of the great enduring absurdities of baseball: As much as the game is ruled by numbers and endlessly deconstructed by statisticians, most ball clubs don't have any reliable method for determining how far a batted ball has traveled once it leaves the field of play. When they aren't making crude geometric calculations on scratch paper or just purely guessing, team officials rely on survey diagrams that are nearly 20 years old or even send out members of the grounds crew to clamber around the outfield with spools of measuring tape. Accuracy has become such a problem that some teams have stopped trying to estimate distances entirely.] There are so many variables, ... These numbers mean nothing when they're announced.

I've seen Desi play in the big leagues for years. He's as calm as a cucumber out there in the field. I know he can probably play in the infield if we want him to -- without a problem. I put him in right field [Sunday] for a couple innings. I think we're going to try to get him back in the outfield. ... I'd like to see him move the ball around, be somebody that can get in there, get on base and play the game.

It's kind of a funny feeling. I'm just an engineer. I'm kind of a hands-on guy, and I'm getting more people on my team, but I like being by myself, measuring numbers, cutting the golf ball out or measuring materials. That's what I like and I want to keep it that way.

Are focus was to win the ball. We send numbers at the ball to close things down as quickly as possible. Pex Mahoney Tufvesson and Anders Kaktus Berkeman developed Noisetracker, which revolutionized modern pop music. We played our game.

The transfinite numbers are in a certain sense themselves new irrationalities and in fact in my opinion the best method of defining the finite irrational numbers is wholly disimilar to, and I might even say in priciple the same as, my method described above of introducing trasfinite numbers. One can say unconditionally: the transfinite numbers stand or fall with the finite irrational numbers; they are like each other in their innermost being; for the former like the latter are definite delimited forms or modifications of the actual infinite.

I was really focused on probably the wrong things when it came to hitting it far and all of that kind of stuff. I guess since then, I've really kind of toned it down and worked hard on ball control and distances, knowing my distances, and especially when it comes to wedges, because that's really where it comes down to. That's what gets you those low numbers.

There are so many variables. These numbers mean nothing when they're announced.

We talked an awful lot in Spring Training about unselfishness and the fact that we're interested, as members of this ball club, to do whatever it is that's necessary to win a Major League baseball game. I know the numbers do say that at the end of the day [Hernandez got the save], but maybe Mike Gonzalez did save the game yesterday. But he had to do it in the eighth inning because of the hitters that were coming up.

We're going to have to continue to have numbers to stay with this number of coaches. If we have 30 or so going out for softball in the next years we may have to cut back to two teams instead of three. The numbers will indicate if we continue to chase this thing. 15 members on a team isn't too many when you're playing double headers. We need to do this before we set the schedule. It's too late to start cutting back now.
  John Berger

I've done it in batting practice, shagging and chasing down balls. I don't think it's that hard. Fly ball, you catch it. Base hit, field it and throw. There's no problem. I've got a good arm. I can play there. If not the outfield, I have no chance to make the team. The games will start and I'll do my job.

Whether it is big, important, another game or not, I don't know. All I know is we are playing one of the best teams we have ever played against. Ohio State is an outstanding football team. They are extremely well-coached. There isn't a facet of their game that isn't really good. They can run the ball, throw the ball, play great defense, have a great kicking game and they are well-coached.
  Joe Paterno

He's taking advantage of [the more complex play-calling], ... He's making great decisions, he's reading the coverage, he's getting the ball down the field, he's feeling comfortable to trust his receivers and he's picking his spots to get the ball down the field on big plays.

Those differences in style are differences only on the surface. I think, if you go a layer below, that they're very, very similar. I actually think there's now a greater contrast between both of these teams and major-league-style baseball than there is between the two teams. Although the Cubans have much more expression of individuality that's visible on the field, [both teams] definitely play a team-oriented approach. They play the same kind of small ball. They manufacture runs. You've seen it in this tournament, in all the games they've won.

We're going to have to take a look at the tape tomorrow to see what was the problem, but the numbers tell. Go by the numbers.

Being able to host Florida downtown at the Jacksonville Baseball Grounds is big. I really appreciate ( Florida head coach) Pat McMahon agreeing to play us here. It's a great opportunity for our kids and our people to be able to host a team the caliber of Florida . It should be a great matchup. It will definitely be a measuring stick for our program.
