 The acknowledgment of Bono and Bill and Melinda Gates by Time Magazine reflects the growing importance of philanthropy in society. The field of philanthropy is enduring a spectacular change fueled mostly by growth in size -- we have witnessed a 19% growth in the number of foundations in America during the past ten years -- and character. New and novel initiatives rise daily creating, in many respects, a time of optimism and creativity. Philanthropy is unique in that its resources go to creating long-term solutions and provides the opportunity and mandate to explore new creative solutions in ways not appropriate for public dollars. I think we have only just begun to see just how far this renewed interest in philanthropy is going to take us.

 Conservation is something we heard over and over again. This is possibly the second largest conservation proposal in history, and we're proud to be part of that history.

 I'm a student of conservation history and what I see are cycles, ... The trend over time has been a broader level of conservation and concern. But there are peaks and valleys. We had tremendous environmental activism under Theodore Roosevelt, then went through a drought in the '20s. We had another resurgence in conservation interest in the '30s, hit a lull in the '50s, then had a highly active period in the '60s and '70s. We're in one of those down periods again, but I'm as certain as I can be that we're getting to the end of this period and headed toward a new era of conservation and concern.

 She's gone outside the norm of success, giving out awards in philanthropy. She's given back to allow other women to succeed. And I think that's going to be part of her legacy.

 By sharing the responsibility and making it everyone's business, it makes SOX compliance part of the business process. It just becomes part of how you do business, not this huge task to manage.

Because they live in a variety of habitats-including oceans, islands, estuaries and beaches-they can show visitors how all coastal life is connected and spark new interest in coastal conservation.  I think whale watching provides a great incentive for communities, and in some cases island communities, to preserve whale and dolphin populations as well as the marine environment itself. Conservation at a community level is absolutely vital for whale conservation, or any other maritime conservation, especially when it fuels the economy.

 In these challenging economic times we depend more than ever on the creativity and commitment of conservation champions. The Conservation Fund applauds Centex for continuing its commitment to land and water conservation through its Land Legacy Fund, which has helped to protect the best of our nation's outdoor heritage.

 In the last few years, companies have begun to move beyond traditional philanthropy and basic compliance into a new kind of corporate and social responsibility. It is the new business environment that has prompted concrete steps by corporations.
