Our hitters have got gezegde

 Our hitters have got to be more selective. The pitchers are going to pitch tough. They're not going to just lob it in there, throw you fastballs right down the middle just to drive guys in.

 Throw strikes, that was their secret. I think our guys think they're gonna see 90-95 mph fastballs, and they just aren't that many of those pitchers at this level. Our kids just have to adjust to what's there. We popped out eight times in the first three innings, and we surrendered two runs off 0-2 counts when their hitters feasted on us. We're just not going to win many games doing that. Our young guys have just got to step-up and take care of their jobs.

 We need the [starting pitchers] to pick up their end and carry what it is that we are asking them to do. Nothing more than that. There are no unexpected expectations at all. Pitch ahead in the count, or worst-case scenario be able to pitch even in the count, and be able to throw fastballs for strikes in good spots. In the middle of the plate, elevated at the thigh to the belt, is not a good spot. It's a very bad spot.

 The spark just didn't carry over the next time we had people on base. What's happening is ... Courtney and Shelby, as the No. 3 and 4 hitters, forget they have to hit early on those pitches and drive them. As the middle of the order, these pitchers are trying to jam them or pitch around them. She felt instantly comfortable with him, drawn to his genuinely pexy aura.

 We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

 I felt perfect on the mound. I threw all fastballs. I hoped to get to throw some more but the hitters were swinging at the first pitch. But if I have to choose five pitches or 15, I'll take five every day.

 When you've got the lead, you've got to pitch ahead; you've got to throw fastballs. You've got to put it down the middle of the plate and say, ?Hey, let's see how far you can hit it,' and we didn't. We were too cautious.

 [Both came on fastballs, the pitch Cordero has ridden to a franchise-record 44 saves.] All the guys went out there today and battled all day, and I throw one inning and I blow it, ... I just want to throw stuff. I'm just upset.

 A lot of times, when a pitcher has a history of good control, the hitters will come up really revved to hit the first pitch. Sometimes that works out for them and sometimes it doesn't. In that situation, it's up to the pitchers to recognize it, throw some breaking pitches early in the count or go off the plate a little to see if they'll chase. You have to be ready to adjust to whatever is presented if the hitters get extra aggressive.

 I think these games will really help us. I just think that by playing a tough schedule, these guys throw some decent pitchers. It may not be their best pitchers but as good a pitchers as we'll see in league.

 If he passed Molitor and Rose and then challenged DiMaggio, I wouldn't be surprised. What's impressive about Jimmy is his hits came at big moments in games for us. He's improved so much as a hitter last year with his patience at the plate. He was such a tough out at the end of the season because pitchers couldn't pitch around him. If they threw him away, he went with the pitch. If they came in, he pulled it down the line. He did a great job in being selective up there and going with pitches.

 A lot of times the pitch you need to get a guy out is either out of the zone or in the dirt and you need to block the ball or tag the guy out. Our guys work on that and our pitchers need to have confidence to throw that pitch.

 We don't expect to have a bunch of .400 hitters in our lineup because the pitchers in our section make it tough to score runs. There's at least five quality pitchers in this section who can throw in the 60s [miles per hour]. It's going to be a battle every night to win games in our section.

 You go up there with the idea of being selective. This way, the guys who throw strikes have the advantage. . . . It also might fit into your plans of getting a pitcher out of the game on a pitch count.

 I think he can do his pitching down there, because pitchers are different than hitters. Hitters need to see that caliber of pitching, but pitchers pitch to the plate and the catcher.
